MP News: A 10-year-old boy, Sumit Meena, was successfully rescued from a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district after a challenging overnight rescue operation. The boy, who had fallen into the borewell on Saturday evening, was brought out early on Sunday morning, though his condition remained critical.
Boy Falls into Borewell While Flying Kites
Sumit Meena, along with other children, was flying kites in a field near his home in Pipliya village, located in Raghogarh town, when the unfortunate incident occurred. The boy fell into a borewell, which was 39 feet deep, and became trapped. The local authorities were immediately notified, and the rescue efforts began swiftly.
Multi-Team Effort to Rescue the Boy
Upon receiving the distress call, the district administration, along with police and rescue teams, rushed to the site. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from Guna was the first to arrive, followed by two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Bhopal. The operation involved heavy machinery, with five JCB machines used to dig a parallel pit to access the trapped boy.
To aid the boy's survival, medical personnel from Guna District Hospital supplied oxygen through the borewell, ensuring that Sumit had some access to fresh air during the critical hours.
Medical Team Rushed the Boy to Hospital
After nearly 12 hours of relentless efforts, rescuers finally reached Sumit and created a passage between the pit and borewell. Unfortunately, by the time he was pulled out, the boy had stopped responding. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in an ambulance for urgent medical attention. However, his condition remained highly critical, and the district administration had yet to release an official update on his health status.
State Government’s Action on Borewell Safety
The recent incident has highlighted the recurring issue of open borewells in MP, with several similar cases in the past two years. In response, the state government has emphasised the need for stricter safety measures. Officials have been instructed to ensure that all borewells are securely covered, and harsh penalties have been introduced for borewell owners who fail to comply with safety regulations. This move follows the tragic death of a two-year-old girl who fell into a borewell in Vidisha earlier this year.
As the investigation continues, the Madhya Pradesh government is working towards preventing such incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of children across the state.
