Prashant Kishor: None in Assembly Election to Victory in By Polls, Did CJP Protest Prove Costly For The BJP?

Prashant Kishor defeated BJP in the Bankipur bypoll by over 19,000 votes, breaking a 29-year BJP streak. CJP protests may have tipped the scale against the party.

Prashant Kishor failed to win a single seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. But on August 3, 2026, his party Jan Suraaj pulled off a stunning turnaround, winning the Bankipur bypoll and breaking BJP’s 29-year grip on the seat.

A Shocking Win in BJP’s Backyard

Kishor’s candidate defeated BJP’s Neeraj Kumar Sinha by nearly 19,000 votes. Bankipur had been a safe BJP seat since 1995, most recently held by the party’s national president, Nitin Nabin. Losing it isn’t just a small setback for BJP, it’s a symbolic blow in their own fortress.

What Role Did the CJP Protest Play?

In the months before the bypoll, student protests linked to CJP (Common Judicial/Public examination-related unrest, widely covered as “CJP protests”) triggered anger over police action, including a lathi charge on students. Notably, children of senior BJP leaders publicly broke ranks to support the protesters, embarrassing the party from within. Analysts believe this unrest, combined with allegations of police detaining Jan Suraaj workers before polling, damaged BJP’s image among young and urban voters in Patna.

Why This Matters Beyond One Seat

The Bankipur result doesn’t change Bihar’s Assembly numbers Kishor’s party still holds just this one seat. But it proves Jan Suraaj can convert ground-level anger into actual votes, something it failed to do in 2025. For BJP, it’s a warning sign that unresolved local grievances, like the CJP protests, can turn even safe seats vulnerable.

Low Turnout, Loud Message

With voter turnout much lower than the 2025 Assembly polls, the result reflects a motivated anti-BJP vote more than a mass mandate. Still, for Prashant Kishor, it’s the proof-of-concept he desperately needed.
