Punjab government to introduce specialised force to check road accidents

According to an official, the Punjab government will set up a specialised force to improve traffic flow and reduce the state’s daily average of 12 to 14 deaths from traffic accidents.

The Sadak Surakhya Force (Road Safety Force) will be formed as a branch of the Punjab Police, and its members will be posted along state and national highways, where 75% of all traffic accidents take place annually.

The force will have about 1,300 members and be outfitted with contemporary technology like body cameras and breathalysers, they claimed. Additionally, interceptors will be sent to the force to monitor vehicle speed.

“Our effort is that the force will start functioning before August 15,” said AS Rai Additional Director General of Police.

Different uniform

The personnel would also get a different uniform, he added. The uniform is in the design phase. Its uniform will be distinctive because it will be a specialised force.

According to Rai, the establishment of the force will reduce road accident.

He continued, “They will keep an eye on accidents that occur as a result of unattended vehicles parked on roads during foggy weather.”

Personnel from the force will make sure the victims of any road accident receive medical care. The two primary causes of traffic accidents, speeding and drunk driving, will also be examined.

According to Rai, 12–14 people per day, or close to 4,500–5,000 persons annually, pass away in vehicle accidents in Punjab. Every year, there are 5,000–6,000 reported vehicle accidents in Punjab.

According to Rai, Punjab’s traffic research institute identified that main district roads, state highways, and national and state highways account for 75% of accidents and fatalities. Additionally, it was shown that between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., drunk driving and excessive speeding account for the bulk of accidents.

According to the statistics, it was suggested to increase a force that will be stationed at state and federal routes in an effort to decrease accidents, Rai added.

The Punjab Police’s newest recruits will serve as the force’s personnel.
