On the occasion of World Water Day 2025, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab reiterated its commitment to water conservation, emphasizing the urgent need for responsible water usage. In a tweet, AAP Punjab highlighted that water preservation is a fundamental responsibility of humanity, stressing the importance of sustainable water consumption.

The Bhagwant Mann-led government has launched several initiatives aimed at protecting Punjab’s depleting groundwater resources and promoting water sustainability. With Punjab facing severe groundwater depletion due to excessive agricultural water use, the state government is actively working on measures to address this crisis.

Key Water Conservation Initiatives by the Punjab Government

Promotion of Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR):

To reduce excessive water usage in paddy cultivation, the Punjab government has been promoting the Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) technique, which requires significantly less water compared to traditional transplanting methods. Farmers are being encouraged through subsidies and awareness campaigns.

Implementation of Micro-Irrigation Systems:

Drip irrigation and sprinkler systems have been introduced across the state to ensure efficient water use in agriculture, reducing dependency on groundwater extraction. The government has provided financial assistance to farmers for installing these systems.

Revival of Traditional Water Bodies:

Several initiatives have been undertaken to restore and rejuvenate Punjab’s traditional ponds, lakes, and water bodies to enhance groundwater recharge. The government is actively working on desilting and maintaining these water sources.

Regulation on Borewell Usage:

To curb over-extraction of groundwater, strict regulations on borewell installations have been enforced, with the government promoting rainwater harvesting as an alternative.

Industrial Water Management:

The Punjab government has mandated industries to adopt water recycling and treatment plants, ensuring that industrial waste does not contaminate freshwater resources.

Afforestation and Watershed Management:

Large-scale tree plantation drives have been initiated to improve rainwater absorption and prevent soil erosion, which directly impacts groundwater recharge.

On World Water Day 2025, the Punjab government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing sustainable water conservation policies. With these measures, the AAP government aims to ensure long-term water security for Punjab while setting an example for other states to follow.
