Tragedy Strikes West Bengal! 2 Lives Lost in Mortar Shell Blast Amid Teesta Floods

The Teesta River flooding carry a mortar shell, which explodes, killing two people as tragedy plays out in West Bengal.

West Bengal: In the Jalpaiguri region of West Bengal, two persons perished and four others were hurt when a mortar shell that was floating through the Teesta River’s floodwaters burst. In the district’s Chatra Para neighbourhood, the incident took place on Thursday night.

Army-Owned Mortar Shell Incident Amidst Sikkim’s Flash Floods

Following Wednesday’s cloudburst and flash floods in Sikkim, news agency PTI reported that the Army owned the lethal shell, which was flowing via rivers down the hills. Locals there claim that the incident took place as some individuals attempted to physically examine the mortar shells. The victims of the event have not yet been named.

Search and Rescue Efforts Persist

The Army and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continued their search for individuals who were swept away and are still missing on Friday as the death toll from the Sikkim flash floods reached 21. Seven of the 23 army troops who were missing from the Burdang region have been found dead, while one has been found alive.

Search for 15 Missing Jawans Continues in Sikkim Floods

The search for 15 missing jawans, according to Chief Minister PS Tamang, is still ongoing. After a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim in the early hours of Wednesday caused the flash flood, 103 persons were still unaccounted for. Over 22,000 people have been affected by the disaster, according to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), and 2,411 individuals have been evacuated and housed in relief camps thus far.
