Experts Weigh In: Rising Cases of Heart Attack Among Indians a Serious Concern

Dr Arun Kochar, in one of his videos on YouTube, highlighted that India has the highest number of heart attack cases globally, partly due to its large population. However, he emphasised that people of Indian origin — including those from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other South Asian regions — are genetically more prone to heart diseases compared to those from other ethnicities.

Alongside genetic factors, poor management of health conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes plays a major role. Many people ignore early warning signs, rely more on advice from friends than on a doctor, and do not get regular health check-ups. Bad cholesterol (LDL), blocked arteries, and unhealthy lifestyles are major contributors to heart attacks.

Dr Kochar explained the difference between heart attack, heart failure, and cardiac arrest, pointing out that each condition affects the heart differently but is often misunderstood in casual conversation.

He further explained that risk factors such as age, gender (with men being more prone), diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise, obesity and stress increase the chances of heart attacks. People working in high-stress jobs, especially in the corporate sector, with poor diets, sedentary routines and a family history of heart disease are particularly at risk.

Dr Kochar stressed the importance of regular annual health screenings to monitor blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol, and cardiac health through simple tests like ECG, echocardiography, and chest X-rays. Preventive care, including regular exercise, a healthy diet, stress management, and avoiding smoking and alcohol, can significantly reduce the risk.

Heart Attack Symptoms Many People Ignore

Another senior doctor, Dr Bimal Chhajer, who enlightens people with his valuable and informative YouTube videos on health and wellness, also talked about heart attacks. He explained the heart attack symptoms that many people tend to ignore.

Before a heart attack occurs, your body gives warning signs. Recognising them early can help in taking preventive measures. Some common heart attack symptoms include:

  • Heaviness in the chest
  • Feeling of discomfort similar to indigestion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Pain or discomfort that may radiate to the back, arms (especially the left arm), or even the shoulders
  • Sudden coldness in the body
  • Vomiting or nausea-like tendencies

If you notice any of these heart attack symptoms, it is crucial to take them seriously and seek medical help immediately.

As this Bareilly viral video of a 50-year-old Bareilly man losing his life due to a heart attack surfaces online, it is important to reflect on what experts have said. If you ever experience any symptoms before a heart attack, it is best to visit a medical professional and get the necessary tests done. Early detection and timely action can be lifesaving.
