“This movie is a true eye-opener. I had only ever heard of similar events happening in Punjab in 1983 and in Kashmir, so I had no idea this also happened in West Bengal. Thanks to director @vivekagnihotri for writing and producing this film. The movie is absolutely mind-blowing. It’s a must-watch with your friends and family. It will make you feel angry that these things were hidden from us for so long-they were never taught in history books or discussed openly. This film is an emotional and numbing experience that will stay with you long after you’ve watched it.”

“Ohh Bhai Full Emotional, Truthful, Mind gobbling Movie based On Bengal Dark Chapter.”

“Still can’t get over the monologue by Simratt Kaur in THE BENGAL FILES, what a mind-blowing performance”

“Incredible movie and haunting. The Bengal Files is our history. Simrat Kaur with a performance of a lifetime as Bharathi Banarjee. Her emotions sweep you, definitely watch out. Namashi and Pallavi Joshi are also fantastic. & Mithu da”

“It’s a shame that brainless movies like Baaghi 4 open well at the Indian box office, and a movie which is a ghastly reminder of our troubled past doesn’t get a proper release in theatres across Bengal. #TheBengalFilesReview. Complete support to @vivekagnihotri.”

About The Film

The Bengal Files is the third instalment in Vivek Agnihotri’s “Files” trilogy, following The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files. It is a fictional drama inspired by real historical events, focusing on the communal violence that occurred in Bengal during the 1940s. The film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi. With a runtime of 204 minutes, it is rated ‘A’ by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for mature content.

The plot follows a CBI officer investigating the disappearance of a journalist in Bengal, uncovering a web of historical and political intrigue. The narrative intertwines personal stories with significant historical events, aiming to shed light on a largely forgotten chapter of Indian history.

The film has faced controversy for its portrayal of historical figures (particularly Gopal Mukherjee, a prominent figure during the 1946 Direct Action Day riots). His family issued a legal notice claiming the film misrepresents him as a “Muslim-hating butcher,” ignoring his role as a freedom fighter and social worker who protected innocent lives.

Before release, the CBFC mandated several edits. Dialogues like “100 years old” were changed to “an old woman who has dementia,” and references to Gopal Mukhopadhyay were removed from multiple scenes. Certain text descriptions were also modified to comply with guidelines.
