Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu Set to Become Next Bangladesh President

Former judge and anti-corruption commissioner Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is all set to become the 22nd President of Bangladesh. The Awami League party, which has an absolute majority in parliament, has nominated him for the top post. A delegation of the Awami League, led by general secretary Obaidul Kader, submitted Chuppu’s nomination papers to the Election Commission earlier in the day. Bangladesh Awami League chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has nominated Shahabuddin Chuppu to the post of the party’s Publicity and Publication Sub-Committee as per Article 25(1)(a) of the Constitution.

According to the report, out of 350 parliamentary seats, the Awami League currently has 302 members, while the main opposition Jatiya Party has 26 seats. The Workers’ Party has four seats, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bikalp Dhara Bangladesh and Gono Forum have two each, Bangladesh Tariqat Federation and Jatiya Party (Manju) have one seat each and the remaining three seats are held by independents. After filing the nomination, Chuppu said, everything happened with the blessings of the almighty.

The nominations for the post of Speaker ended at 4 pm on Sunday. Election Commission officials told IANS that barring Chuppu, if no other nominations are filed by 4 pm on Sunday, if their nomination papers are found valid during the scrutiny of forms tomorrow, we will declare them as the elected president. Will declare as Obaidul Kader handed over the nomination papers to Shahabuddin at Hasina’s office in Dhanmandi on Friday afternoon. Born in Pabna in 1949, Chuppu was a member of the Pabna District Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League.

He was the convenor of the Swadheen Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad in Pabna in 1971 and participated in the liberation struggle movement. He became the President of Pabna District Jubo League in 1974. He was imprisoned for three years after protesting the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975.

He was later appointed as the law ministry’s coordinator in the Bangabandhu assassination case. He also served as District and Sessions Judge and retired in 2006. He was a commissioner in the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016. The presidential election is to be held on February 19, but will only happen if there is more than one candidate. The term of Abdul Hamid, the country’s longest-serving president, will end on April 23, and according to the constitution, there is no scope for him to be re-elected. Article 50(2) states that no person shall hold office as President for more than two terms.
