North Korea fires over 130 artillery rounds in reaction to South Korea-US drills

South Korea’s military said on Monday that North Korea fired about 130 artillery shells into its western and eastern maritime border. With this move of North Korea, relations between the two neighbors have become more tense.

‘Suspicious shells were fired in the buffer zone’

South Korea’s Chief of Staff said that under the Inter-Korea Treaty in 2018, suspicious shells were fired in the buffer zone built in the northern part to reduce tension.

Awaiting more details regarding the incident

However, there was no immediate news of these shells falling in the South Korean border. It is not yet decided when this incident took place and detailed information has not been shared in this regard.

‘Warning given to North Korea’

South Korea’s military said that after the shells were fired, North Korea was given a verbal warning to comply with the agreement.

According to media reports, South Korea says that North Korea has increased missile tests and military exercises in recent weeks.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is close to conducting his country’s seventh nuclear test, according to South Korea and the US.

“The enemy should immediately cease military actions that cause escalation of tensions in areas near the front lines where visual surveillance is possible,” the unnamed spokesperson said, warning that the North would respond firmly.

“We sternly warn the enemy not to stir up unnecessary escalation of tension along the front lines.”

This year South Korea has continuesly accused the North for violating the agreement with artillery drills, including one day in mid-October when more than 500 rounds were fired into the sea.
