Pakistani Shia Muslims Demand Opening of Kargil Highway, Express Desire to Move to India from PoK

Unrest in the area is brought on by demands for the opening of the Kargil Highway and relocation to India made by Shia Muslims in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

This is the cause of the current anarchy in Pakistan’s controlled Gilgit-Baltistan. Shia minorities have risen up in opposition to the Pakistani army’s and extreme Sunni organisations’ oppression. The Shia organisations in the area are speaking out against the army for the first time. The attitude of minority Shias is so sharp that even Pakistan Army is scared. The Army Chief has sent Ulemas for damage control.

Demands for Kargil Highway Access and India Relocation

Shia residents of Skardu, which is 90 km from India, are adamant that the Kargil Highway leading there should be opened. He claims he no longer wants to reside in Pakistani-ruled Gilgit-Baltistan and instead wants to move to India. Gilgit-Baltistan has roughly 20 lakh residents. Of these, the Shia group comprises about 8 lakh individuals. The Pakistani Army is frightened by these Shias’ rebellious behaviour. The Pakistani Army has sent out 20.000 more soldiers in response to the rebellious attitude.

Flags, Protests, and Historical Displacement

Shia community members in Gilgit Baltistan waved the flag in protest of the Pakistani Army. The phrase “The “uniform” is behind these terrorists” was raised by the Shias. Shias in Gilgit Baltistan claim that since 1947, the Pakistani Army has been expelling them. Here, the Sunni population was relocated by the army. In a region where Shias once predominated, Shias are now in the minority. Even the army is reluctant to enter the Shia-dominated areas of this country because of how bad the situation has gotten. Shia organisations continue to demonstrate despite the implementation of Section 144 in Skardu, Hunza, Diamir, and Chilas. Mobile internet use is prohibited.

Ulemas Sent to Quell Shia Uprising in Gilgit-Baltistan

Asim Munir, the chief of the Pakistani army, despatched four Muslim ulemas to Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday. Munir was forced to take this action when the additional battalion likewise failed to put an end to the uprising. It is too late; we won’t turn back, claims a Shia from Skardu. Shia priest Agha Baqir Al Hussaini made some of these remarks during a religious event in Skardu, which infuriated the local authority. The cleric was taken into custody. Al Hussaini had actually questioned the gathering of ulemas that had taken place in the Skardu region. He demanded that the laws against blasphemy be stricter in this. Shias fear that their community will be singled out as a result of stricter blasphemy laws.

Civil War Looms, Calls for Union with India Grow Louder

Additionally, Gilgit Baltistan residents protested the Pakistani government last month. People in the area have warned Pakistan’s leadership of civil war and a possible union with India. The locals claimed that they would launch a civil war if the government chose to repress them. Gilgit Baltistan would be merged with India if the government does not release its leaders.
