Partygate scandal forces Boris Johnson to step down as MP

Boris Johnson: Former U.K. Prime Minister has resigned from his House of Commons seat after being accused of misleading the Parliament over Partygate.

The Partygate scandal refers to a slew of parties that Johnson organized in his official home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

These parties defied an official lockdown imposed throughout the country due to the pandemic. Johnson’s critics accused him of not following the law and not showing sensitivity.

Boris Johnson’s parties were investigated by a bipartisan House of Commons committee. It found that the former PM had misled the House about these parties.

By resigning on Friday, Johnson has avoided his suspension as an MP. He can still run for Parliament now after resigning as a House of Commons MP.

Johnson wrote a lengthy resignation statement and accused his political foes of driving him out of public life. But the former PM, who helped the Conservatives get a historical mandate in 2019, hinted that he could be back in future.

“It is very sad to be leaving Parliament — at least for now,” he said.

A “combative” resignation statement

According to Sky News, Johnson’s 1,000-word resignation statement takes on his rivals in no uncertain terms.
He says the privileges committee hasn’t produced a single shred of evidence that suggested he misled the Parliament. Johnson also says the report is “riddled with inaccuracies” and “reeks of prejudice.”

Johnson also accused the privileges committee of taking revenge on him for Brexit and wants the referendum to be reversed.

As PM, Boris Johnson oversaw the U.K. exiting the European Union.

A considerable challenge

With Johnson gone, the current PM Rishi Sunak faces a considerable challenge to hold on to two Conservative seats in the Commons.

On Friday, Nadine Dorries also announced she was quitting the House of Commons.
