Sweden Court grants permission to burn Quran outside mosque during Eid-al-Adha

Sweden: A Swedish has allowed burning of a Quran outside a major mosque in the capital Stockholm. The burning is supposed to take place on the occasion Eid-al-Adha, one of the holiest days in Islamic calendar.

The police has told the Sweden court that there is no connection between security issues and planned gathering. This assurance prompted the court to make its ruling.”The security risks and consequences that the authorities can see connected to a Quran burning are not of such a nature that according to the current law they give grounds for a decision to reject a request for a general gathering,” the court said.

Sweden and book burnings

Burning Quran in Sweden has become a political signature for the far-right extremists in the country. Far-right politician Rasmus Paludan is famous for his act of Quran burning. A report by Reuters state only an Iraqi refugee and two other will be talking part in book burning.

Last year far-right extremists had burned a Quran outside the Turkish embassy which resulted in Turkey canceling a visit by Sweden’s defense minister to Ankara.

Turkey’s refusal on NATO

Turkey has been antagonized by Sweden’s support for Kurdistan Workers’ Party and acts of allowing Quran burning. Sweden remains one of the few nations who is a part of EU but not NATO. Turkey won’t greenlit Sweden’s entry until issues regarding Kurds and Quran burning are not resolved.

In February, Sweden’s police banned an anti-NATO demonstration that also was supposed to feature Quran burning.
