Turkey-Syria border region hit by another earthquake of 6.4 magnitude

Turkey Earthquake: Another earthquake of magnitude 6.4 jolted the southern Turkish province of Hatay on late Monday night, as the Turkish government continues to tackle the aftermaths of earthquakes that devastated the country two weeks ago. This shocks comes after an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 shook Turkey’s Kahramanmaras region early on February 6, which was followed by over 40 aftershocks that devastated the country and its adjoining areas.

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck Turkey’s southeastern Hatay province, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said on Twitter. It was at the depth of 7.7km, it said. Hatay was one of the ten provinces that were hit by the twin quake on Feb 6, which left over 40,000 dead.

The number of fatalities from the earthquakes two weeks ago in Turkey increased to 41,156, according to the nation’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority AFAD, and it was expected to rise even higher given that 3,85,000 apartments were known to have been destroyed or seriously damaged, and numerous people are still unaccounted for.

According to the U.N. agency for sexual and reproductive health (UNFPA), 3,56,000 pregnant women who are survivors of the earthquakes urgently need access to medical care. These include 1,30,000 in Syria and 2,26,000 in Turkey, among whom 38,800 will give birth in the upcoming month. Many of them were battling for food and water while living in camps or outside in the bitter cold.
