Atanu Chakraborty: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has voiced exemplary confidence in the operations and oversight of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC). The development came after the resignation of Atanu Chakraborty, the part-time Chairman, who cited personal values.
The move is seen by market experts as a reassurance to investors on HDFC Bank, suggesting that there are no material concerns regarding the bank’s governance or conduct.
Chakraborty’s RBI-HDFC Journey
From 2019 to 2022, Atanu served as RBI Deputy Governor, overseeing monetary policy and financial stability during turbulent times like the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, he transitioned to the board of HDFC Bank. However, a series of whispers related to governance issues started surfacing in late 2025. Several reports hinted at internal probes into risk management, compliance lapses and potential conflicts associated to his RBI tenure.

Atanu Chakraborty-RBI’s Clean Chit
In a statement, RBI remarked that it has approved the transition arrangement facilitated by HDFC for the vacancy of part-time Chairman. Earlier, HDFC appointed Keki Mistry for three months as its interim chairman.

The RBI commented that HDFC Bank still stays a “Domestic Systemically Important Bank” with flawless and powerful fundamentals. It also commented that the HDFC Bank has sound financials, competent management team and a professionally run board. It went on to comment that it didn’t notice any material concern whatsoever based on its periodic assessment regarding the bank’s governance or conduct.
Why the Clean Chit Feels Too Quick?
The core controversy boils down to speed. For an important figure like Atanu Chakraborty who had access to sensitive data, this should take weeks, not days. Many believe that the phrase “no material concerns” masks potential oversights.
Interestingly, HDFC Bank was fined by RBI in 2025 for customer data issues and third-party risks. If no issues existed, why resign so abruptly? Or, if minor flags prompted the exit, does the chit whitewash them?
