London-based technology company Nothing has announced that its latest smartphone series, the Nothing Phone 3a, will be manufactured in India. This move aligns with the Indian government's ‘Make in India’ initiative, supporting the country’s growing manufacturing sector. The company aims to leverage India's strong production ecosystem while contributing to the local economy and driving innovation.
Manufacturing in Chennai with a Strong Workforce
The Nothing Phone 3a series is being produced at the company’s Chennai facility, which employs over 500 workers. Impressively, 95% of the workforce consists of women. By setting up manufacturing in India, the brand is not only reducing costs but also creating job opportunities, strengthening India’s position as a global manufacturing hub.
Nothing’s Impressive Growth in India
Nothing has experienced significant success in India. According to Counterpoint Research, the company saw a remarkable 577% year-over-year growth in the Indian smartphone market in 2024. This growth was largely driven by the high demand for the Phone 2a series and its sub-brand CMF by Nothing. Additionally, the company recently surpassed $1 billion in lifetime revenue, just four years after its launch in October 2020.
India’s Rise as a Mobile Manufacturing Hub
India has become a major player in smartphone manufacturing, with 99.2% of mobile phones sold in the country now being made locally. The manufacturing sector has grown significantly, reaching a value of ₹4,22,000 crore, with exports crossing ₹1,29,000 crore in 2024. On average, over 325 to 330 million mobile phones are produced in India each year, with nearly a billion devices in use nationwide.
Nothing has also rapidly expanded its retail presence, growing from 2,000 stores at the start of 2024 to 7,000 stores today. With the Nothing Phone 3a designed in London and manufactured in India, the brand blends British innovation with Indian manufacturing expertise, reinforcing India’s position in the global tech industry.
