FIR against women journalists, Tripura Police personnel accused of ‘intimidation’

A case has been registered against two women journalists in Tripura following a complaint by right-wing group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). At the same time, women journalists have accused the policemen of intimidation. Journalists Samridhi Sakuniya and Swarna Jha have alleged that the police came to their hotel and “intimidated them”.

While the Union Home Ministry on Saturday said that the news circulated on social media about the destruction and vandalism of a mosque in Tripura is fake and misrepresented. The ministry also said that there is no report of casual or grievous injury or rape or death of any person in any such incident in Tripura as alleged in some social media posts.

Swarna Jha wrote in her tweet, “Last night at around 10:30 PM, the police came outside our hotel, but at that time they did not talk to us. When we went to checkout around 5:30 in the morning, the police stopped us. Told about the complaint against and asked to be taken to Dharmanagar police station for questioning.” They also shared the copy of the FIR in post.

After the complaint was registered, a police team went to interrogate. Sources said that the two journalists have neither been arrested nor taken into custody so far. Sources said that both of them may be questioned in the fake news circulation case. In a strongly worded statement, the Home Ministry said that no case of any mosque structure being damaged in Tripura has been reported in the recent past and people should remain calm and not be misled by such fake news. “Reports have been spread that a mosque has been damaged in Kakraban area of ​​Gomti district in Tripura. These reports are fake and misrepresentation.’
