Property tax to be implemented in consultation with public: Manoj Sinha

Regarding property tax in Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has said that people are unnecessarily protesting on property tax. It will be implemented only after consultation with the general public. The LG said that the property tax is being implemented to ensure financial self-sufficiency of cities and improve public amenities.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday ordered the imposition of property tax in municipal areas from April 1. There were many protests regarding this. However, the organisation, institutions and individuals involved in the protest were assured by the administration that the state tax in Jammu and Kashmir would be much less as compared to other union territories. The tax rates will be five per cent of the taxable annual value for residential properties and six per cent for commercial properties, according to a government notification.

Political parties have demanded immediate withdrawal of this order despite the administration assuring transparency in tax collection and lower tax rates. Several organisations, including the Jammu Bar Association, objected to the administration’s decision. In such a situation, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said in a statement, “Property tax collection will be done after consultation with the general public. Full care will be taken to protect the interests of common citizens. Financial self-sufficiency of cities is necessary. This will improve the sustainability of cities and public amenities in the Union Territory.”

Lieutenant Governor Sinha criticized the initial opposition to the wealth tax. “We want every facility but are not ready to pay anything. People need to reconsider it,” he said. He said that despite the lowest property tax in the country, people were making unnecessary hue and cry over it.
