Snowfall Update: Avalanches in J&K, Shimla receives first snowfall of season, more details here

Snowfall Update: For 11 districts through Monday, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued an avalanche warning with a low hazard level. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, avalanches are predicted to occur above 2,000 metres across Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramula, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, and Reasi in the upcoming 24 hours.

Shimla received its first snowfall

It gave the people the advice to stay away from the avalanche-prone locations. On Saturday, there were two avalanches in the Sonamarg region of Ganderbal and one in Gurez, Bandipora. However, nobody died as a result. Two people had been killed by an avalanche in Sonamarg’s Sarbal neighbourhood on Thursday.

According to the weather department, yesterday certain regions received up to 6 cm of snow while the majority of other places had rain in Himachal Pradesh. Kufri and Narkanda, two adjacent hill stations, each received 12 and 16 centimetres of snow, respectively. To enjoy the snowfall, thousands of visitors descended upon Kufri.

Roads blocked in THESE regions due to snowfall

Following snowfall and rain, 276 routes were blocked to vehicular traffic. Lahaul and Spiti had the most roads closed (177), followed by 42 in Kullu, 30 in Shimla, and 17 in Mandi. As many as 172 electricity distribution transformers were impacted, including as many as 126 in Kullu. There were nine water supply networks that were impacted, including at most seven in Chamba.

The BRO will deploy its personnel tomorrow to resume transportation via Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali with Keylong, if the weather stays favourable. Until January 17, when a new Western Disturbance was predicted to hit the Himalayan area, the weather in the state will stay dry starting tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Weather Service has issued a warning for low-lying hills and plains due to a cold wave, dense fog, and ground frost.
