Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Visit Manipur, Pledges Peace Talks Amidst Violence

Amit Shah, the union home minister, announced on Thursday that he would visit Manipur shortly and stay there for three days. In order to bring about peace in the violent state of Manipur, he promised to speak to the locals there. This follows recent reports of violent attacks in Manipur. Amit Shah declared, ‘I myself would travel to Manipur in a few days and stay there for three days to talk to the people of Manipur about bringing about peace.’

Amit Shah Urges Peace Amidst Tribal Solidarity March

Amit Shah stated in reference to the unrest in Manipur, “There were skirmishes in Manipur after a court ruling. I would urge both sides to uphold peace in the knowledge that everyone will receive justice. In response to the “Tribal Solidarity March” organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Churachandpur district’s Torbung region to denounce the non-tribal Meiteis’ desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification, violence broke out in many Manipur districts earlier this month. The event attracted thousands of protesters, and conflicts between tribal and non-tribal participants occurred there.

Ethnic Unrest Escalates as Armed Forces Deployed

A group of individuals vandalised the home of Manipur PWD Minister Konthoujam Govindas on Wednesday in the Bishnupur district, claiming that the state’s administration is not doing enough to safeguard residents from terrorists from another community. However, when the mob invaded the home in the Ningthoukhong neighbourhood and destroyed a piece of a fence, windows, some furniture, and electronic devices, the minister and his family were not there.The ongoing ethnic unrest between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state, which began three weeks ago and has already cost more than 70 lives, marks the first time a minister’s home has been attacked. Armed forces from the army and paramilitary groups have been sent in to manage the situation in the state.
