Mamata Banerjee: A fresh political controversy has emerged for Mamata Banerjee after reports suggested that around 60 TMC MLAs skipped a crucial party meeting. The development comes amid recent incidents involving senior leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee, fueling political debate and raising questions about internal party unity and coordination.

New political issues arise for Mamata Banerjee

The political leader and West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has been facing new challenges due to reports that several members of her legislative body failed to attend an important legislative meeting. This issue is emerging at a time when there have been increasing concerns about some top-level political figures in the political circles.

Absence of 60 MLAs raises eyebrows

The large-scale absence has triggered speculation about internal dynamics within the party and raised questions about discipline and coordination among lawmakers.

Dining Out Turns Dearer, Commercial LPG Price Hiked By Up To Rs 53.50, Impact On Common Man Explained

Commercial- LPG- Price- Hike
Google

The price of commercial LPG cylinders has been increased by up to Rs 53.50, adding to the operating costs of restaurants, hotels, and food businesses. While the hike does not directly affect domestic LPG users, it could lead to higher food prices as businesses may pass on the increased expenses to customers.

New Price Hike in Commercial LPG

In a development that could lead to an increase in cost of dining, oil marketers have revised the prices of commercial LPG cylinders by as much as Rs. 53.50. This new price change will directly impact restaurants, hotels, eateries, street-food sellers, and others who utilize commercial LPG for their day-to-day operations. While the hike is occurring, most businesses are already contending with increasing operational costs such as the cost of raw materials, logistics, and labor.

Why should we care about this price hike in commercial LPG?

Commercial LPG is predominantly used by restaurants, hotels, caterers, food joints, and street-food sellers. As fuel prices increase, their cost of operation becomes elevated as well. In order to sustain profit margins, these businesses will eventually have to compensate for this rise in cost by raising menu prices.

Will the common man be affected?

While domestic LPG cylinder prices remain unchanged, the commercial LPG hike can still indirectly impact households. Consumers may notice higher prices at restaurants, cafes, roadside eateries, and food delivery platforms.

Impact on small businesses

Small restaurants, street food vendors, and local eateries are likely to face the biggest challenge. Unlike large restaurant chains, smaller businesses often operate on thin profit margins and may find it difficult to absorb the additional fuel expenses without increasing prices.

Many small business owners will have to carefully balance rising costs while ensuring they do not lose customers.

Rural connectivity gets major boost as Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema dedicates, launches road projects worth over ₹18.76 crore in Dirba, Lehragaga, and Baghrol Regions

Harpal Singh Cheema

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Sunday dedicated and laid foundation stones for a series of road infrastructure and development projects worth more than ₹18.76 crore in the Lehragaga region, giving a major boost to rural connectivity and strengthening the local economy. The projects are aimed at eliminating safety hazards, improving rural infrastructure and ensuring all-weather connectivity for thousands of villagers.

Highlighting the vision of the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government, Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the government is transforming rural Punjab by actively strengthening nearly 40,000 kilometres of roads across the state, thereby delivering better connectivity and basic amenities to villages that had remained neglected for decades.

Addressing a public gathering in village Daska, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema dedicated a 10.5-kilometre road connecting Bachhuana to Bareta via Daska and Bahadurpur, which has been widened from 12 feet to 18 feet at a cost of ₹7.15 crore. The widening of the road is expected to resolve long-standing traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns caused by the previously narrow and dilapidated route.

The Finance Minister also dedicated a newly constructed 4-kilometre metalled road connecting Daska and Khatri Wala at a cost of ₹1.27 crore, converting a long-standing dirt track into an all-weather road. In addition, a 1-kilometre link road leading to Dera Baba Dhaula Pir on the Daska-Bahadurpur stretch was completed at a cost of ₹34.50 lakh, facilitating smoother travel for devotees and local residents.

Expanding the development footprint to Baghrol and nearby villages, Harpal Singh Cheema dedicated development works and laid foundation stones for projects worth nearly ₹10 crore. In the presence of village Sarpanches, Panchayat members and local residents, he announced the construction of a 3-kilometre road from Baghrol to Bujrak at a cost of ₹1.10 crore and a 2.35-kilometre road connecting Baghrol with Burj Tilla and Kheri Nagaiyan at a cost of more than ₹1 crore.

He further highlighted that ₹1.16 crore has been spent on the construction of a 2.75-kilometre road linking Baghrol and Ballamgarh. Among the major initiatives undertaken in the area is the paving of nearly 12 kilometres of earthen roads that had remained neglected for nearly 70 to 80 years. These roads are being transformed into paved road networks at a cost of ₹5.25 crore, significantly improving connectivity and accessibility in the region.

The Finance Minister also dedicated a newly constructed bridge that has strengthened transportation links between two prominent villages, further enhancing connectivity in the area.

Highlighting ongoing infrastructure works, Harpal Singh Cheema said, “A nearly 4-kilometre road from Baghrol to Kheri Dagaiyan, including the village phirni, is currently under construction at a cost of ₹1.83 crore. Simultaneously, widening works are underway on the roads connecting Baghrol with Kangrodi and Kamalpur at an estimated cost of ₹4.50 crore.”

Collectively, the ongoing construction and expansion works cover nearly 19 kilometres of roads around the Baghrol area and are expected to address transportation challenges that have affected agricultural activity and economic mobility for generations.

Reiterating the commitment of the Bhagwant Mann Government towards balanced development, Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “The Bhagwant Mann Government is prioritising rural development to bridge the gap between urban and rural infrastructure. While rural road networks had suffered from neglect for decades, the government considers the provision of quality basic infrastructure to every village an essential priority.”

Large numbers of local residents, administrative officials, community leaders and Panchayat representatives attended the inauguration and foundation stone-laying ceremonies and welcomed the projects, which are expected to ease daily commuting, strengthen transportation networks and provide a significant boost to the rural economy.

Orthopaedic treatments under Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana cross ₹84 crore as demand for bone & joint care rises across Punjab

Punjab news

Punjab is witnessing a steady rise in bone, joint and trauma-related health conditions, with orthopaedic treatments emerging as one of the most significant components of the state’s public healthcare delivery, according to data from the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana.

Highlighting the trend, the State Health Agency (SHA) data revealed that more than ₹84 crore has been spent so far on bone, joint and trauma-related treatments so far, under the scheme, reflecting both increasing demand for surgical care and expanded access to specialised orthopaedic services across government hospitals.

The data shows that knee replacements account for the highest share of procedures under the scheme, followed by hip surgeries and a large number of fracture fixation cases involving plates, nails and other implants. These interventions are increasingly being performed in district and tertiary care hospitals under cashless treatment coverage.

Punjab has now recorded over 45 lakh registrations under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, indicating widespread utilisation of cashless healthcare services. Ludhiana district has reported over 4.8 lakh beneficiaries, while Patiala has recorded around 4.1 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme.

The increasing caseload of orthopaedic conditions reflects a broader public health shift, with degenerative joint diseases and mobility-related disorders becoming more common, particularly among the ageing population. Patients presenting with knee and hip deterioration, chronic joint pain and restricted mobility are being increasingly seen in government hospitals.

The orthopaedic care, which often involves surgical implants, prolonged treatment and rehabilitation, traditionally places a significant financial burden on households.

For a beneficiary under the scheme, 43-year-old Gulshan Taneja from Khera Gajju near Rajpura, these broader trends became personal in a gradual, unrelenting way.

Taneja had met with an accident while working at a factory. Walking began to take effort. A sudden pain would stop him mid-step, forcing him to steady himself against a wall. The swelling around his knee persisted, and stiffness made even simple movements feel unfamiliar. Sometime, he would pause before standing, unsure whether his leg would hold his weight.

He was admitted to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala on May 6 and underwent treatment for ligament tear the following day. Doctors recorded symptoms including severe joint pain, swelling, instability and difficulty bearing weight.

Under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, treatment worth ₹86,750 was provided cashlessly. He was discharged on May 12, returning home without the immediate fear of a medical bill that could have weighed as heavily as the illness itself.

Taneja said, “I am recovering now and it’s thanks to the Sehat card that I did not have to pay any money for my treatment. The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana is helping us reduce out-of-pocket expenditure by making such treatments accessible.”

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh said, “The burden of orthopaedic disorders has been on an exponential rise, and thus, has brought to light the indispensable need to buttress accessible and affordable operative care across the state of Punjab.” He added that, under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, the government is working to provide cashless knee, hip, and trauma treatments to thousands of patients, reducing financial hardship while enhancing mobility and recovery, along with overall quality of life.

The expenditure of over ₹84 crore in around 4 months under the scheme represents not only increased healthcare utilisation but also a broader shift towards restoring mobility, reducing disability and improving quality of life for patients across Punjab.

We’ll make Punjab country’s premier education destination, eliminating need for students to look towards Canada or Australia: CM Bhagwant Singh Mann

Bhagwant Mann

Four years after launching a sweeping transformation of Punjab’s education system, the Bhagwant Mann Government is now setting its sights on a bigger goal: turning Punjab into the country’s leading education destination and reversing the long-held perception that quality education can only be found abroad. Pointing to Punjab’s rise past Kerala in national education rankings, the growing dominance of girls among board toppers, and the success of 359 government school students in JEE Main, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said the state’s Sikhya Kranti (Education Revolution) has begun delivering tangible results on the ground.

Speaking at the ‘Sitaare Zameen Te’ programme in Chandigarh, where top-performing Class 8, 10 and 12 students were honoured, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann asserted that Punjab’s government schools are no longer struggling for recognition but are setting new benchmarks for excellence, confidence and opportunity across the country.

Sharing a few snippets from this heartfelt gathering on X, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated: “Today in Chandigarh, I had the privilege of honouring the meritorious Class 8, 10 and 12 toppers of the Punjab School Education Board during the ‘Sitaare Zameen Te’ programme. On the occasion, I issued special instructions to the Education Department that students securing equal marks should be awarded a joint first position instead of deciding ranks on the basis of date of birth. Today, due to the dedicated efforts of your government, Punjab’s government schools are surpassing even Kerala in the field of education.”

“My message to the students is simple: no matter how successful you become in life, always remain grounded. Always respect your teachers and parents, because even a winner has to bow down to receive a medal. My heartfelt best wishes to all of you for a bright and successful future,” the post concluded.

Addressing the gathering during the “Sitaare Zameen Te” function organised to felicitate top-performing students from districts across Punjab, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said the state’s ‘Shikhya Kranti’ (Education Revolution) has transformed the aspirations of students studying in government schools and opened new avenues of opportunity for them.

Congratulating the students for their outstanding achievements, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “I congratulate all the students who have made their parents, teachers and society proud through their hard work and dedication. Such functions were never organised in the past because previous governments never paid attention to education, particularly in government schools. Earlier, students studying in these schools were often hesitant and uncertain about competing in examinations, but today they are excelling with confidence and proving their capabilities.”

Highlighting the Punjab Government’s efforts to improve the quality of education, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Our teachers are being sent abroad for specialised training where they learn modern teaching practices. After returning, they share this knowledge with students and fellow teachers, ensuring that global standards of education reach classrooms across Punjab. This path-breaking initiative is rejuvenating the education system and bringing qualitative changes that directly benefit students. These teachers are acting as agents of change and strengthening the Education Revolution in Punjab.”

He added, “This initiative enhances the expertise of teachers and equips them with modern methodologies to prepare students for future challenges and international competition. The results are visible today as students from Punjab are excelling in various fields and making their families proud. Since the present era belongs to skills, our government is placing special emphasis on imparting quality skill training to youth.”

Calling upon students to remain grounded and hardworking, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “You should strive to become grass-rooters in life and not parachuters. Grass-rooters rise from the ground through hard work and determination and go on to conquer the world. For such hardworking individuals, the sky is the limit. Parachuters, on the other hand, descend from the sky and are destined to fall sooner or later. Your focus should always be on excellence, and our government will provide every possible support to help you achieve your goals.”

Drawing an analogy with aviation, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Just as a runway enables an aircraft to take off smoothly, the Punjab Government is creating opportunities and support systems that help students realise their dreams. Every effort is being made to give wings to the ideas of our youth, and no stone is being left unturned in this noble mission. I urge every young person to carve out a distinct identity through hard work and dedication because there are no limits to what you can achieve.”

Urging students to remain humble despite success, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “You should never become arrogant because of your achievements. Confidence and positivity are essential qualities, but pride should never accompany success. Humility, hard work and perseverance are the true keys to sustained success, and these values must always guide your journey.”

Referring to Punjab’s glorious legacy, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “Punjab is not only the food bowl of the country but also its sword arm. The people of Punjab are known throughout the world for their courage, resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Every inch of this sacred land carries the legacy of great Gurus, saints, seers and martyrs who taught us to stand against injustice, tyranny and oppression. Punjab’s rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality are recognised globally.”

He further added, “Punjabis are natural leaders and have always excelled in every sphere. It is a matter of immense pride that Punjabis played a leading role in India’s freedom struggle and made unparalleled sacrifices for the nation.”

Addressing the gathering, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said, “When I assumed office, nearly four lakh children in Punjab were studying while sitting on the floor. Today, due to the concerted efforts of the Punjab Government, not a single child has to sit on the floor to study. Punjab is now securing top positions in almost every national report related to the education sector.”

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Punjab Prabhari Manish Sisodia stressed the need for comprehensive reforms in the country’s examination system. He said, “The outdated examination system in the country must be replaced. Incidents like the leakage of examinations such as NEET are ruining the futures of countless students. Instead of relying on a system rooted in the 19th century, examinations should evaluate the overall competence and capabilities of students rather than confining assessment to a three-hour test.”

Manish Sisodia further said, “The examination system must be aligned with the needs and abilities of 21st-century students so that their overall personality and potential can develop. For this transformation to take place, governments that prioritise and invest in education must be elected.”

Students Share How Punjab’s ‘Shikhya Kranti’ Is Transforming Their Schools, Confidence and Aspirations

Students who participated in the event also expressed appreciation for the Punjab Government’s efforts to strengthen education. Harleen Sharma from Jaito in Faridkot district thanked CM Bhagwant Singh Mann for consistently encouraging students and motivating them to pursue excellence. Nikhil Pandey, a student of Government School Rupana in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, presented a poem dedicated to his teachers and thanked CM Bhagwant Singh Mann for inspiring students in government schools to dream big and work towards achieving those dreams.

Suhani Chauhan from Ludhiana said that the Punjab Government’s educational initiatives have significantly enhanced students’ confidence in government schools and appreciated CM Bhagwant Singh Mann for encouraging students to speak and perform on public platforms. Anmolpreet Kaur, a Class XI student from a Government School in Zira, said that the Punjab Government has made education more accessible by providing transportation facilities for girls. She also highlighted the installation of an elevator in her school and shared that CM Bhagwant Singh Mann had assured students that he would visit the school soon.

Bhagwant Mann Govt’s Sikhya Kranti Delivers Results Across Classrooms

Punjab’s education transformation has begun yielding measurable outcomes across the state. Government schools in Punjab have secured the top position in the country in the NITI Aayog’s assessment of school education, surpassing several traditionally high-performing states. This year, 359 students from Schools of Eminence and other government schools qualified JEE Main, while the government has also partnered with coaching institute Physics Wallah to provide free coaching for competitive examinations such as JEE and NEET.

The Bhagwant Mann Government has introduced Parent-Teacher Meetings across nearly 19,000 government schools, bringing together around 25 lakh parents and over 1.8 lakh school staff to jointly focus on students’ development. Other key reforms include overseas training programmes for teachers in Finland and Singapore, transportation facilities for girl students, and the expansion of Schools of Eminence aimed at providing world-class education to Punjab’s children.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Anurag Dhanda has sharply criticised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the NEET paper leak issue, accusing the government of focusing on controlling information rather than preventing examination irregularities.

Anurag Dhanda Criticises Education Minister Over NEET Paper Leak Controversy

Reacting to remarks made by the Education Minister regarding the circulation of leaked material on Telegram and other digital platforms, Dhanda questioned the government’s priorities and alleged that students’ concerns were being overlooked. He argued that the focus should be on preventing paper leaks and ensuring the integrity of examinations rather than restricting the spread of information after leaks occur.

Dhanda said that recurring controversies surrounding competitive examinations have created uncertainty and anxiety among students across the country. He also questioned why repeated incidents of alleged exam irregularities continue to emerge despite government assurances regarding examination security.

The comments came amid ongoing political debate over the conduct of national-level entrance examinations and demands from opposition parties for greater accountability and transparency in the examination system.

The Union Education Ministry has maintained that steps are being taken to strengthen examination processes and prevent future irregularities, while assuring students that measures are being implemented to safeguard the credibility of competitive exams.

The issue continues to remain a major point of discussion among students, education stakeholders, and political parties, with calls for stronger safeguards to protect the fairness and reliability of national examinations.

Bhagwant Mann: Scheme Aims to Facilitate Religious Travel

The Chief Minister Teerth Yatra Scheme was introduced to provide citizens, particularly senior citizens and devotees, an opportunity to undertake pilgrimages to important religious destinations with government support.

Officials said the programme is intended to make religious travel more accessible and allow people to visit places of spiritual significance without facing major financial constraints.

Positive Response from Residents

According to Balbir Singh, the scheme has received encouraging support from local residents, who have welcomed the initiative and appreciated the government’s efforts to facilitate religious journeys.

The minister stated that such programmes help people fulfill long-held aspirations of visiting important places of worship while promoting social welfare and community participation.

Government Highlights Welfare Initiatives

The Punjab government has described the Teerth Yatra Scheme as part of its broader welfare agenda aimed at benefiting different sections of society through public-service programmes and citizen-focused initiatives.

Officials maintain that the scheme will continue to provide opportunities for more residents across Punjab to undertake pilgrimages to significant religious destinations in the coming months.
