Will Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah get their respective extensions?

The Indian cricket board’s preparations for the IPL 2020 can continue unabated for now. As Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, the president and secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), respectively, extended for two weeks after a Supreme Court bench on Wednesday agreed to hear the plea filed by the board.

The bench always meant to hear BCCI’s plea on Wednesday, which has now been tabled twice – first in December 2019 and then again in April. The board had proposed several amendments to the board’s constitution, including the most contentious one about the ‘cooling-off’ period, which affected Ganguly’s stint. The former Indian captain’s cooling-off period scheduled to have started after July 27 while Shah’s period in the sidelines has already started from May.

Coronavirus outbreak has accounted for yet another big tournament with the Cricket’s Asia Cup 2020 becoming the latest victim of the pandemic. The former captain in an Instagram conversation with Sports Tak has announced that the upcoming edition of the Cricketing tournament due later this year has to be canceled, said Ganguly. Ganguly’s announcement has come on the eve of the ACC meeting scheduled to take place tomorrow, July 9.

With BCCI keen on a leadership role in cricket’s recovery once sports resumes, India’s itinerary will see a major rewrite, increasing the workload and travel of its cricketers. Besides adding new series to their over-booked Future Tours Programme (FTP), India will honour its old commitments and undertake tours that didn’t take place because of the ongoing lockdown.

India tour of Australia might be extended

The cancellation of the T20 World Cup in Australia might result in India playing more ODIs and T20Is than previously scheduled during the year-ending tour Down Under. It’s a move that will help Cricket Australia (CA) cuts its losses as it struggles to deal with the COVID-19 economic slump.

“Once things settle down, BCCI will chalk out a plan. But we will try to play them once the situation improves. This will give a chance for Zimbabwe to earn money through their TV deals. We will also ask other boards whether they would want to play extra games. It could be Australia, Sri Lanka or any other nation. We will ask other boards and try to come up with a formula where everyone can make some money and be financially stable.”

Jofra to return in third Test match

With the series finely-poised at 1-1, Anderson is confident both he and Archer can take the field on Friday but thinks he must first sit down with captain Joe Root and head coach Chris Silverwood to assess the situation.

“We’ve not seen much of him because he’s been in isolation for a few days. I’m sure he’ll want to play in this game because it’s such a crucial game, the series resting on it,” Anderson said.

“He’s said about his frame of mind and that’s something that over the next two days he’s going to have to sit down with the captain and coach and figure out if he’s in the right place to play.”

“I know what I did was an error of judgment and I have suffered the consequences of that. I accept I put the other guys at risk, I did not follow the advice and therefore apologized to my team-mates, to the West Indies team, and to everyone involved in the series. But I haven’t committed a crime and I want to start feeling myself again.”

Bombay High court asked to ban the crew age above 65 for shooting

Maharashtra: The state’s stand not to allow any cast or crew above 65 years of age to be present for the shooting of films and television serials. But the Bombay HC on Tuesday asked the government how are physically fit senior citizens expected to live if they are not allowed to go out for shooting and earn their livelihood.

The question about guidline set by High Court was posed by a bench of Justices Shahrukh Kathawalla and Riyaz Chagla. They asked question while hearing a petition filed by film and TV artist Pramod Pandey (70). Pandey had challenged the state age guideline for the media entertainment industry .
Government pleader Poornima Kantharia replied that the age limit was fixed because of pandemic, according to the lockdown rules, however the judges pointed out the state has allowed 30% of staff at private offices without any age restriction.

She also pointed there is no such restriction on those who travel in trains, buses and planes. “A person cannot be deprived of his livelihood. He wants to earn and is not allowed to earn. You deprive him of his meals…Are you going to feed him?” asked Justice Kathawalla, and she said that the crew includes junior artistes who earn around Rs 600 a day. “And here we have a municipal commissioner who says everything is okay in Bombay”.

The affidavit also said the judges, should also state whether “any data/report/statistics” were considered before issuing the age restriction and “whether a similar rule is made applicable to individuals above 65 years during travel in trains, buses, aircraft”, to those allowed to attend shops/private offices and individuals who are allowed to attend funerals and weddings. “Answer all our questions,” said Justice Kathawalla, posting the hearing to Friday.
