Supreme Court pronounces judgement on Arnab Goswami’s bail

In a historic judgment, the Supreme Court on Friday pronounced its detailed reasoning for granting interim bail to Republic Media Network’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami in a ‘reopened’ abetment to suicide case.

On November 11, the top court had granted interim bail to Goswami saying it will be ”travesty of justice” if personal liberty is curtailed.

A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud will pronounce its reasoning in its verdict today.

Expressing concern over State governments targeting some individuals on the basis of ideology and difference of opinion, a vacation bench headed by Justice Chandrachud had said that the submissions of the lawyers appearing in the matter before it would be “evaluated in the judgment for which reasons shall follow”.

It had said that if state governments target individuals, they must realise then that there is an apex court to protect the liberty of citizens.

The top court had granted interim bail to two others in the case — Neetish Sarda and Feroz Mohammad Shaikh — on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each and directed that they shall not tamper with the evidence and shall cooperate in the probe It had said that the Bombay High Court ‘was in error’ in rejecting the pleas filed by Goswami and these two persons seeking interim bail in the case.

Scotland becomes first country to make period products free

Scotland has passed a bill that has made period products such as tampons and pads free to all who need them.

Periods are a biological predisposition of being born a female, and the average female will spend more than 2,500 days, or roughly 7 years, of her life menstruating, but many women and girls around the world cannot afford period products.

The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill, which passed unanimously, requires local authorities to ensure that period products are generally obtainable free of charge. Schools and colleges must ensure period products are freely available to students, and designated public places must also make the products available.

“The campaign has been backed by a wide coalition, including trades unions, women’s organizations and charities,” Monica Lennon, the lawmaker who introduced the bill last year, said ahead of the vote. “Scotland will not be the last country to make period poverty history.”

After the vote, Lennon said the decision was “a signal to the world that free universal access to period products can be achieved.”

At least half a billion women and girls globally lack facilities for managing their periods, according to a 2015 report from the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

In the United Kingdom, the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated period poverty, with 3 in 10 girls there struggling to afford or access products, according to a report released in May by Plan International, a girls’ rights organization.

In the U.S., where women make up more than half of the population, women are more likely than men to live in poverty, and they spend an average of 2,535 days in their lifetime, or almost seven years, on their periods, according to UNICEF.

Delhi govt rejects request of police to convert stadiums into temporary prisons

The Delhi Police on Friday sought permission from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government to convert nine stadiums into temporary prisons, in wake of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmers against Centre’s new farm laws.

Seeking permission Delhi Government rejects the request of Delhi Police seeking to convert nine stadiums into temporary prisons, in view of farmers protest.

Rejecting Delhi Police’s request, Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain said in an order on Friday, “The farmers’ demands are justified. The Centre should immediately accept the demands put forth by the farmers. The farmers’ agitation is entirely peaceful.”

“Protesting in a peaceful manner is the democratic right of every Indian citizen. For this, they cannot be put in jails. Thus, the Delhi government is rejecting Delhi Police’s request to convert the stadiums into jails,” said the Delhi Home Minister in his statement on Friday.

This comes a day after CM Kejriwal tweeted in support of Punjab farmers and their protest against the agriculture laws, stating that peaceful demonstration was a Constitutional right. He also added that the use of water cannons against them was a crime.

“All the three farming Bills (now Acts) of the Central government are anti-farmer. Instead of withdrawing these, farmers are being prevented from holding peaceful demonstrations, water cannons are being turned on them. This crime against farmers is absolutely wrong. Peaceful protest is their Constitutional right,” Kejriwal had tweeted.

However, leaders of the Aam Admi Party (AAP), which rules Delhi, objected to any move to jail the farmers.

AAP MLA Raghav Chadha, who is also the party’s national spokesperson, on Friday defended their right to protest and opposed any move to set up temporary prisons for them.

Bhupesh Baghel asked clearity over vaccine price from Centre

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has asked the centre should make it clear whether it will be providing vaccines to states for free or what will be the contract if the cost has to be shared between the centre and the states.

“We are following centre’s health department guidelines over how the vaccine will come and its distribution. Any questions over whether the vaccine will be free or not seem to be asked only to chief ministers and not to the union ministers. Is there any indication that the union government is not going to give the vaccine for free and the onus will be on states?,” Baghel said during the session on Thursday evening.

“It seems the centre is not going to spend on vaccines and is only going to issue guidelines like it has been happening till now. States like ours will do their bit the union government has to make it clear whether it is making vaccines available for free to states and if not what will be the share of expenditure between centre and states. If that also will not happen then why we should follow guidelines of the centre are all expense is to be borne by us? We will make our own guidelines,” he added.

“There is economic slowdown in the entire country, but we ensured that it is not there in Chhattisgarh. 7 lakh workers and others came to Chhattisgarh but only 26,000 left the state when the nationwide lockdown was imposed. We reached out to businesses and told them that workers should continue to be there,” he added.

Speaking at the 18th Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Baghel also criticised Congress politians such as Kapil Sibal and Ghulam Nabi Azad for publicly attacking the party, and he also suggested that grievances should be laid out in the party’s internal forum.

NBA legend Michael Jordan donates $2M to feed America’s hungry

On the eve of Thanksgiving, NBA legend Michael Jordan has made a $2 million donation to Feeding America to help fight hunger in the United States.

“In these challenging times and in a year of unimaginable difficulty due to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to pause and give thanks,” he said. “I am proud to be donating additional proceeds from The Last Dance to Feeding America and its member food banks in the Carolinas and Chicago to help feed America’s hungry.”

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia, and the sub-national entities Leiden, Norfolk Island, and the inhabited territories of the United States.

Thanksgiving is deeply rooted in the history of America and its religion and cultural traditions. Americans believe that their thanksgiving is modelled after the 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Native American Wampanoag people. The festival was observed in the manner of a feast that brought together the two peoples in celebration of having survived.

“An incredible gift to be thankful for – NBA legend Michael Jordan is donating $2 million to help our neighbors facing hunger!” Feeding America tweeted.

The proceeds came from “The Last Dance” documentary, which chronicled the lead-up to the sixth and final championship run by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s.

Jordan has been active in donating in causes dear to him this year. Prior to the airing of The Last Dance, he said he would donate proceeds of the 10-part series to Friends of the Children, a national nonprofit that provides vulnerable children with professional mentors.

In June, Jordan and the Jordan Brand announced a $100 million donation over the next decade to help the ongoing fight against racial injustice in wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

He also opened a second health clinic in Charlotte to help people without healthcare in October.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn Nets guard Jarrett Allen got creative this year in an effort to continue his annual Thanksgiving charity event amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to USA Today, for the past three years Allen has hosted “Meals + Math,” bringing children to a grocery store in Brooklyn and helping them pick out enough items for a Thanksgiving meal by providing them with $100 gift cards and tips for shopping on a budget.

This year, Allen hosted a Zoom call to work with the students on budgeting for holiday meal shopping list. The students were with Children of Promise, an after-school program and summer camp for kids who have a parent who is incarcerated.

Australian coach Justin Langer warns Australian team for sledging

The ODI series is going to start from November 27 between India and Australia. Australian players are always known for taking an aggressive attitude against Team India. But Australian coach Justin Langer warned his players that there would be no room for abuse during the series.

Langer, however, believes that he expects a lot of splitting between the two teams of the competition. Langer, himself an aggressive player, said that in the last few years, Australian players have talked a lot about the behavior inside and outside the field.

In any case, Australia has faced a lot of criticism in the past for their players’ mentality of winning. Langer said, “People say that in Australia you get nervous, I’m not sure they are referring to the conversation on the field. This is because they are playing against some very excellent players.

Langer went on to say, “If you’re facing Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath or bowling Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist or Ricky Ponting, it will make you more nervous than a few words spoken on the field.”

Langer has also talked about the change in Australian players. The Australian coach said, “In the last few years we have discussed our behavior inside and outside the field and we have talked that there is no room for abuse. There is a lot of space for splattery and this is a competitive attitude. ”

Australian captain Finch to bank on Maxwell-Stoinis against India

Australian captain Aaron Finch said that India has many options to replace Rohit Sharma in ODI team. Rohit is out of the team due to injury. Rohit was hurt during the IPL, who will now be able to play in the Test series starting on December 17. Mayank Agarwal can start the innings with Shikhar Dhawan in his absence.

India has the best player as Mayank

Finch said in the virtual press conference before the first match of the series, ‘He is a great player and has been very successful against us. Rohit’s injury is unfortunate. ‘He said that you always want to play against the best players but whoever takes his place, maybe Mayank, who himself is also in excellent form. India has another great player in the form of Mayank to take his place.

Finch has played in the IPL along with Virat Kohli in Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was asked if he noticed the weaknesses in the Indian captain’s game, he said, ‘There are no weaknesses in that. See his record. We have to be on the lookout for his wicket. He is the best batsman in ODI cricket.

Captain hopes from Maxwell-Stoinis

Despite the absence of injured all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, the Australian captain is satisfied with his team. He has three all-rounders in the form of Henriques, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. He said that our team is very balanced at this time. Maxwell can do wonders in T20 cricket and his bowling has improved a lot. Stoinis has also learned great bowling in the death overs with experience.

During cricket taking place in a bio-safe environment amid the Corona epidemic, Finch emphasized the management of players and the management of their workload. He said that it is important to pay attention to how he is feeling physically and mentally. Everyone’s preparation and workload are different and their management is important. During this series, a limited number of spectators will return to the stadiums, for which Finch is very excited.

Australia looks stronger in front of India in Rohit’s absence

India vs Australia, India vs Australia ODI,

The Indian cricket team will make a comeback to international cricket against a veteran like Australia, amidst the COVID-19. Virat Kohli’s team last played an international match against New Zealand in early March. The Indian team will be seen in the Navy Blue Jersey of the 1992 World Cup.

Mayank Agarwal to open

In Australia, the focus will be on how the team combination becomes perfect in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Mayank Agarwal will start the innings with Shikhar Dhawan or it will not be easy to cope with the balls of Shubman Gill, Mitchell Starc or Pat Cummins. The Indian batsmen are going to face the best fast attack while Australia also have a skilled spinner in the form of Adam Jampa who has troubled Kohli many times. In the presence of returning Steve Smith, run machine David Warner and rising star Marnus Labuschen in the rhythm, the Indians will have to do their best to defeat Australia on their land.

Clincher for KL Rahul

The Indian XI may include both Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami or the team management can field one in a match keeping the Test series in mind. In such a situation, Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini can be given a chance. For KL Rahul too, this tour will not be less than an ordeal. Vice-captain Rahul was in superb form in the IPL which he would like to maintain but the real challenge is to replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the wicket where he will have to catch the googly of Yuzvendra Chahal. Rahul himself believes that it is not possible for anyone to replace Dhoni.

Hardik Pandya specializes in aggressive batting at number six or seventh, allowing Kohli to land with two spinners. At number four, Shreyas Iyer did well on the previous tour. Chahal will be a cause of concern for the Australian middle order. At the same time, Bumrah will have additional responsibility in the absence of death bowler specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
