Pakistan opposition starts countrywide protests to oust government

Supporters of Pakistan opposition parties were converging on a stadium in the city of Gujranwala on Friday to begin a countrywide protest campaign to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan, who they accuse of being installed by the military in a rigged 2018 election.

Sharif was speaking via video link from London to a gathering of tens of thousands of people organised by opposition parties to kick-off a countrywide protest campaign in the eastern city of Gujranwala aiming to oust Khan’s government.

“Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, you packed up our government, which was working well, and put the nation and the country at the alter of your wishes,” Sharif told the gathering – the largest since the 2018 elections.

The protest campaign comes at a time when Pakistan is experiencing an economic crisis, with inflation touching double digits and negative growth. The next general election is scheduled for 2023.

“Go Imran go. Your time is up!” shouted tens of thousands of the opposition supporters gathered at the Gujwanwala stadium hours before the leaders arrived.

US election 2020: Covid, national security to be the topics of Biden-Trump’s next debate

The next presidential debate between Democratic candidate Joe Biden and Republic candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to be held on October 22.

This will be the second debate between the two fierce candidates. With just two weeks left for elections, this debate can play a crucial role in deciding the future of Biden and Trump’s White House journey.

The Commission on Presidential debates on Friday informed that the topics for the October 22 debate will include Covid-19 and national security among others. “Kristen Welker, moderator of the October 22, 2020 presidential debate, has selected the topics for that debate,” the Commission said.

Apart from covid-19 and national security, the other topics of debate are — American families, race in America, climate change, and leadership.

The debate is scheduled to be held at Belmont University in Nashville.

It is expected that the final debate could feature India and wider neighbourhood, a report of The Tribune said.

The debate was earlier scheduled for October 16, but was postponed after the Republic candidate Donald trump tested positive for the covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, both the candidates have been carrying their presidential campaign rallies to garner as much support as they can.

While the poll aggregator has suggested Biden’s clear lead over Trump, the competition still remains neck-to-neck between the two candidates.

Trump is known for launching personal attacks while Biden often gets anxious in between debates.

SC dismisses plea seeking removal of Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the plea that sought removal of Uddhav Thackeray led Maha Vikas Aghadi government and imposition of President’s rule in Maharashtra.

The Apex court refused to entertain the plea, saying, ” “You are at liberty to approach the President, don’t come here.” The top court bench also included Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian.

The plea was presented before 3-judge bench headed by Chief Justice, SA Bobde.

The plea cited the recent case of Sushant Singh Rajput’S death and demolition of Kangana Ranaut’s property as the example of bad governance to seek the removal. It also claimed that the state did not take actions in line with constitution.

Vikram Gehlot, in his petition, said that the affairs of the state were not carried out with legal provisions. In his plea, He referred the death of Sushant Singh Rajput and demolition of Ranaut’s property as examples of poor law and order in the state.

During the video-conference hearing, the top court said that Maharashtra is a big state and it can not be said the constitution is not being followed on the basis of some incidents.

SC sought attorney general’s on HC order asking ‘molester’ to get rakhi tied by complainant

The Supreme Court on Friday sought Attorney General K K Venugopal’s assistance in a plea filed by nine women lawyers to set aside a Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order of granting bail to an accused in a molestation case on the condition that he requests the complainant to tie him a ‘rakhi’.

A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar issued notice to the office of Attorney General K K Venugopal on an appeal filed by nine women lawyers who have said that courts across the country should be restrained from imposing such conditions as these are “against the principle of law”.

The high court, in its July 30 order, had granted bail to the accused and imposed a condition that he along with his wife shall visit the house of the complainant and request her to tie ‘Rakhi’ to him with the promise to protect her to the best of his ability for all times to come.

Senior advocate Sanjay Parikh, appearing for the petitioners including lawyer Aparna Bhat, told the bench that the appeal has been filed in an extraordinary circumstance.

The trauma of the victim is trivialised by such conditions, Parikh told the bench, also comprising Justice B R Gavai. These kinds of conditions are imposed which are against the principle of law.

Repeatedly such observations are being made, he said. Are you submitting only for Madhya Pradesh or the entire country, the bench asked.

It said another question of law which arises for consideration of the apex court in the matter is whether the high court ought to have employed circumspection and sensitivity while dealing with a case involving a sexual offence having been committed against a woman.

“The high court erred in imposing a condition that defeated the very purpose of granting bail by directing the alleged perpetrator to establish contact with the victim,” the plea said.
