US Iran War: In the wake of several months of growing tension in the Middle East, a marked shift occurred in global stock markets on account of the rising hope of fresh talks between the United States and Iran regarding peace and ending the ongoing war, which led to a marked reduction in the price of crude oil. Brent crude fell to below $85 per barrel, while WTI was trading below $81 per barrel, representing one of the largest declines recorded in recent months.

Why did oil prices fall?

This latest drop has been caused by the statement of US President Donald Trump about new US-Iran talks after he cancelled the plans for military strikes against Iran. This move raised hopes that through diplomatic efforts the situation could be managed and the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz could stay open since it accounts for a lot of oil export from the region. Therefore, fears about oil supply disruption led to a massive sell-off of crude oil futures.

Global markets react positively

A fall in oil prices was a positive move in the global financial market. Oil prices usually help in lowering the inflation rate, improving company margins, and boosting consumer spending. The stock market futures of the U.S. rose after a prediction that low oil prices might help in economic growth in case of easing of geopolitical issues.

What does it mean for consumers?

In case crude oil prices stay low, there is a possibility of benefits to consumers, such as low prices for petrol, diesel, aviation, and transport. Other industries, which depend on fuel, such as airlines, logistic companies, and producers, might have lower expenses. The time when consumers will benefit from low fuel prices is determined by domestic policy and market situation.

Could the relief be temporary?

Despite the market’s positive reaction, analysts remain cautious. The proposed peace talks are still at an early stage, and any breakdown in negotiations or renewed military escalation could quickly reverse the decline in oil prices. Traders are expected to monitor every diplomatic development closely, as geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East continues to play a major role in determining global energy prices.

Chasing Repayment vs. Capturing It: The Real Difference

Pavitra Pradip Walvekar: Every lending business collects repayment. What separates durable lenders from fragile ones is when that collection happens — and whether the borrower has any say in it.


Two models exist. In the first, the lender disburses and waits. The borrower receives the money, lives their life, manages their obligations, and if their financial position and priorities align, makes a repayment when it falls due. The lender then monitors, reminds, follows up, and eventually recovers. This is chasing repayment. It is the dominant model in consumer lending, and it is a model built on a structural assumption that breaks under pressure: that the borrower will choose to repay.


In the second model, the lender never needs the borrower to make a choice. Repayment is captured at source, meaning deducted from earnings before they reach the borrower’s account, intercepted at the payment gateway before revenue settles, or extracted from salary before it arrives. The borrower does not decide to repay. The structure decides for them. This is a captured repayment. And it changes everything about the risk profile of the loan.

The Structural Weakness of the Collections Model


Collections is a cost masquerading as a function.


Every rupee spent on reminder calls, field agents, legal notices, and recovery proceedings is a rupee that the lending model should have been designed to avoid spending. Collections infrastructure is expensive, scales poorly under stress, and its effectiveness degrades precisely when it is needed most: during economic contractions, when borrowers face genuine financial hardship, and their willingness to prioritise loan repayments competes with rent, food, and medical expenses.


The microfinance sector demonstrated this with uncomfortable clarity in FY25. Collection efficiency dropped to 90% in Q3 FY25 as overleveraging and weakened group dynamics eroded the social pressure mechanisms that had substituted for structural capture. The lenders most exposed were those whose repayment models depended on borrower goodwill reinforced by peer accountability, a form of soft capture that worked during stability and failed during stress. When the stress arrived, the collection machine was overwhelmed at exactly the moment it needed to perform.


Goodwill-dependent collections are a strategy calibrated for good times. It is not a risk control.

What Source Deduction Actually Means


Captured repayment is a structural redesign of where the lender sits in the borrower’s cash flow sequence.

  • The Delivery Driver


A delivery partner’s loan repayment is deducted from platform earnings before those earnings are settled to their account. The repayment does not compete with the driver’s other obligations. It does not depend on the driver remembering a due date, having available funds at the moment of deduction, or prioritising the EMI over a competing expense. Repayment is captured upstream, before the cash flow becomes discretionary.

  • The Merchant at the Gateway


A merchant’s loan repayments are intercepted at the payment gateway, settled to the lender directly from incoming revenue before the merchant’s account is credited. The merchant does not choose to repay from available funds. The funds never become available until after repayment has already occurred.

  • The Salaried Borrower


A salaried borrower’s EMI is deducted at source from payroll before salary is disbursed. The repayment is not a decision the borrower makes on payday. It is a fact of their pay structure.
In each case, the lender is not the last claim on the borrower’s cash flow. Structurally, they are the first. This sequencing is the entire difference. A borrower who has already repaid (because the structure made it unavoidable) cannot default on that payment regardless of what happens to their financial priorities in the week following disbursement.

The Risk Profile Shift


Source deduction does not eliminate credit risk. Borrowers can still default on loans where the capture mechanism fails, where earnings drop below the deduction threshold, or where the platform relationship terminates. What it changes is the shape and timing of the risk.


Captured Repayment Surfaces Stress Early


When a driver’s earnings drop, the deduction captures less, and the lender sees the deterioration in real time, immediately, at the source, before a formal missed payment has occurred. Early visibility enables early action. The lender can restructure, adjust, or exit before the loan has moved through multiple delinquency buckets.


Collections-dependent Models Surface Stress Late


The missed payment registers only after the due date has passed, after the reminder cycle has run, and after the borrower has had time to cycle through all available cash flow and concluded that the lender’s claim will not be met this month. By the point of first formal delinquency in a collections model, the borrower’s financial situation has often already deteriorated significantly.


Pavitra Pradip Walvekar, a Pune-based entrepreneur and investor whose work spans Indian fintech, credit, and capital allocation, asks a question that most lending conversations skip past entirely: why does a collections process exist at all?


His answer is that collections are what happen when the lending structure fails to capture repayment at the point where it was still certain. The timing difference between finding out about a problem at the point of missed payment versus observing cash flow deterioration in real time at the source is not a marginal operational improvement. It is the difference between a lender who can act and one who can only react.

Where the Model Works and Where it Doesn’t


Pavitra Pradip Walvekar: Source deduction is not universally applicable. It requires a capture point, a settlement mechanism, a payroll system, and a payment gateway through which the borrower’s cash flow passes before becoming discretionary. Without that capture point, the model reverts to collections.


This is precisely why ecosystem lending and trapped cash flow belong together as structural principles. Lending inside a platform, to a driver, a merchant, or a supplier, means the capture point already exists. The platform that pays the driver is also the platform through which the lender can route the deduction. The payment gateway that settles the merchant’s revenue is also the mechanism through which the lender captures repayment. The structure is already there. The lender is simply inserting itself at the right point in the sequence.


Lending outside an ecosystem, to a borrower with no observable cash flow channel, offers no natural capture point. The lender is left chasing. And chasing, as the collections infrastructure of the lending industry demonstrates every quarter, is an expensive, unreliable, and structurally inferior substitute for capturing.


This is why, build the capture point first. The repayment follows.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday asserted that the Punjab Government’s ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ (war against drugs) will continue until every ounce of the menace is eliminated from the state, declaring that the remarkable success of the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ has been made possible through the active participation of people. During a meeting with Village Defence Committee (VDC) volunteers, Pinda De Pehredaar, in Ludhiana, the Chief Minister said the campaign has completed 500 days, during which 70,000 drug smugglers have been arrested, while 1.25 lakh volunteers across 13,000 villages have emerged as the backbone of the movement.

Launching a scathing attack on previous governments, Bhagwant Singh Mann said the Akali Dal introduced drugs and the Congress patronised the menace, whereas the AAP Government has broken its backbone through strict action against smugglers, treatment and rehabilitation of victims, and an unprecedented public awareness campaign. He said Punjab, once branded as ‘Udta Punjab’, is now transforming into ‘Padhta Te Tandrust Punjab’, as reflected in the state’s top ranking in school education, record JEE and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) success and merit-based employment, while reiterating that the fight against drugs will continue until Punjab becomes completely drug-free.

Sharing a few snippets from this programme, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated on X: “Met with Village Defence Committee (VDC) volunteers in Ludhiana today. Our campaign against drugs has delivered remarkable results over the past 500-plus days. With the joint efforts of the Punjab Police and our volunteers, 70,000 drug smugglers have been arrested, breaking the backbone of the drug trade. The state once branded as ‘Udta Punjab’ is now transforming into ‘Padhta Te Tandrust Punjab’. Punjab’s top ranking in school education, 882 students qualifying NEET, and more than 68,500 government jobs stand as proof of this transformation. This fight will continue until drugs are completely eradicated from Punjab. Let us all come together to build a ‘Rangla Punjab’. Inquilab Zindabad.”

Addressing a packed gathering, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Today is a significant day as Yudh Nashean Virudh has completed 500 days and our Village Defence Committees have completed one year. I thank the people of Punjab for turning both these initiatives into a people’s movement. The day is not far when together these two movements will completely eradicate the menace of drugs from Punjab.”

Thanking the gathering, the Chief Minister said that he is indebted to all those serving Punjab in the true spirit and added that their determination proves that any challenge, however big, can be overcome with collective resolve. “The problem that once appeared insurmountable is steadily coming to an end within 500 days. Many people believed that this curse could never be eliminated, but with the active support of the people we have broken the backbone of this menace,” said CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

The Chief Minister said that the AAP Government has ensured treatment for those trapped in drug addiction by taking them to de-addiction and rehabilitation centres so they can live with dignity and self-respect. “We have arrested 70,000 drug smugglers in the last 500 days. Across 13,000 villages, nearly 1.25 lakh volunteers are actively working to eliminate drugs. Only an honest government committed to the welfare of the people could have undertaken such determined action,” he said.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the Akali Dal introduced ‘chitta’ (drugs) into Punjab and the Congress further promoted and patronised the menace, just as both parties were responsible for misgovernance in the state. “Today, our government has wiped out drugs from the state. Helping someone leave drugs behind is equivalent to taking that person on a pilgrimage. It gives me immense satisfaction that our government has rewritten Punjab’s history from ‘Udta Punjab’ to ‘Padhta Punjab’ through an education revolution,” he added.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Punjab has emerged as the top-performing state in primary and middle-school education due to the sustained efforts of the state government over the last four years.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the AAP Government has upgraded primary and middle-school education, strengthened the overall system, introduced smart classrooms, and ensured advanced training for teachers. “Punjab has surpassed Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi to secure the number one position in primary and middle-school education. The latest figures released by NITI Aayog, one of the Government of India’s premier institutions, confirm that Punjab now ranks first in the country in this sector,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that for the last four years, the state government has focused on teacher training, modern teaching methods, and smart classrooms, due to which Punjab now occupies the top position. “Earlier, Kerala held the number one position, but today Punjab has claimed the top rank with a huge margin. We will continue making even greater efforts in the coming years because education is the light that dispels darkness,” he added

The Chief Minister said that when his government assumed office, Punjab ranked 27th in school education, but today the state has risen to the number one position. He further said that while only 80 students from Punjab Government schools had qualified the NEET examination in 2021, the number has increased to 881 students in 2026, the highest-ever achievement by Punjab Government schools.

CM bBhagwant Singh Mann stated that the AAP Government is making concerted efforts to strengthen the education sector so that children from ordinary families receive the same opportunities to excel as anyone else.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Centre has failed to conduct even a single NEET examination in a transparent manner, with examination papers leaking repeatedly and causing disappointment among students. “In contrast, our government has completed four-and-a-half years in office without a single examination paper leak in Punjab. A few days ago, a case of cheating during a pharmacy examination was detected, and the culprits were immediately arrested,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that to provide quality healthcare to the people, 1,090 Aam Aadmi Clinics are currently functioning across Punjab and this number will soon increase to 1,400. He said that these clinics have become the cornerstone of accessible healthcare, with more than five crore OPD consultations already being completed.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said that to ensure comprehensive healthcare for every resident, the Punjab Government has launched the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna, the first scheme of its kind in the country. “The scheme provides cashless medical treatment of up to ₹10 lakh to every resident family in Punjab. Punjab is the first state in India to offer such comprehensive healthcare coverage. This has substantially reduced the financial burden on people while ensuring quality treatment,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that this historic initiative aims to provide universal healthcare coverage to every family in the state and added that people have already availed free treatment worth more than ₹937 crore under the scheme.

The Chief Minister said that a total of 3,100 sports grounds are being developed across all districts of Punjab to promote a sporting culture in the state. “Sports are the most effective weapon to steer the youth away from the menace of drugs. The AAP Government is successfully organising ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian’, in which three generations of a family, from grandparents to grandchildren, participate together,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that it is a matter of immense pride that Punjabi sportspersons are leading the country’s biggest sporting teams, with Punjabis serving as captains of the Indian men’s cricket team, the Indian women’s cricket team, and the Indian hockey team.

He said that previous governments had tarnished Punjab’s image, whereas the present government is rebuilding it. “Earlier, drugs were supplied in official vehicles during the previous governments. Today, drug smugglers are behind bars,” said CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

The Chief Minister said that the Akali Dal, BJP and Congress had done nothing except ruin Punjab and now seek power only to plunder the state. “These parties have betrayed Punjab and repeatedly ignored the interests of its people. The Punjab Government is constructing 43,000 kilometres of roads across the state to strengthen rural connectivity. The contractors executing these road projects will also be responsible for their maintenance,” he noted.

The Chief Minister said that it is a matter of immense pride that the Punjab Government has provided more than 68,000 government jobs to the youth. “The era of cash-for-jobs and favouritism has ended in Punjab. Today, government jobs are being provided purely on the basis of merit and eligibility. Every government appointment has been made transparently on merit, due to which not even a single recruitment has been challenged in any court,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that owing to the AAP government’s industry-friendly policies and conducive industrial environment, leading industrialists are making a beeline to invest in the state. “Prominent companies including Sanatan Textiles, Nestlé, CLAAS, Freudenberg, Cargill, Verbio, Danone and several others have already commenced operations in Punjab,” he added.

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann further said that Tata Steel has established its second-largest plant after Jamshedpur in Punjab with an investment of ₹3,200 crore, while Japanese steel major Aichi is also investing in the state. “My government’s endeavour is to place tiffins in the hands of youth instead of ‘syringes’ by creating employment opportunities. As idle hands are a devil’s workshop, our government is making every effort to ensure maximum employment opportunities for the youth so that they do not fall prey to social evils. Unemployment is the root cause of several social problems, and we are committed to eliminating it,” he affirmed.

Cabinet Ministers Aman Arora, Tarunpreet Singh Sond and Dr. Balbir Singh, Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha and several other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Asserting that sustained investment in education has transformed government schools into institutions of excellence, the Chief Minister said improved infrastructure, overseas teacher training and modern teaching practices have led to a growing preference for government schools among parents. CM Bhagwant Singh Mann Interacts With Students, Visits Classrooms and Laboratories

The Chief Minister also spent considerable time interacting with students during his visit to the newly inaugurated School of Eminence. He visited classrooms, science laboratories and other academic facilities, where he took stock of the modern infrastructure and interacted with students about their studies, scientific experiments and learning experience. Bhagwant Singh Mann also met teachers and school staff, appreciating their dedication towards strengthening the education system in the state.

During the visit, several students enthusiastically sought the Chief Minister’s autograph, while some presented him with hand-made portraits as a token of affection and gratitude. During the function, a parent also presented the Chief Minister with a bouquet and lauded the Punjab Government’s path-breaking initiatives to transform the education sector under his leadership.

Sharing a few snippets from this momentous occasion, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated on X: “It was a matter of immense pride and satisfaction to inaugurate the new School of Eminence building in Ludhiana today. The outstanding learning environment in our government schools is encouraging students to leave private schools and enrol here. Punjab today ranks number one in school education, and this year 882 students from our government schools have qualified NEET while more than 125 have cleared JEE Main. Through quality education, we are building the “Rangla Punjab” our children dream of. Inquilab Zindabad.”

Addressing the gathering, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Today is a historic day for the people of Punjab, especially for the residents of Ludhiana. Two new School of Eminence buildings at Kidwai Nagar and Miller Ganj are being dedicated to the people. With these two additions, Ludhiana now has 16 Schools of Eminence, making it the first district in Punjab with the highest number of Schools of Eminence.”

The Chief Minister said, “After leading Punjab’s Industrial Revolution, Ludhiana is now emerging as a frontrunner in the state’s Education Revolution. The School of Eminence model has been instrumental in significantly reducing the gap between rich and poor in access to quality education. Today, children from ordinary families are receiving facilities that are even better than those available in many private schools.”

He added, “These schools are helping children from humble backgrounds turn their dreams into reality by imparting them quality education.”

The Chief Minister said, “The School of Eminence at Kidwai Nagar has been completed at a cost of ₹10.62 crore. The new building has been constructed over 8,300 square yards and has 60 rooms, including 27 classrooms, seven modern laboratories, a library, the Principal’s office, a state-of-the-art auditorium with a seating capacity of 500 students and nine washrooms.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “The School of Eminence at Miller Ganj has been completed at a cost of ₹3.48 crore. The new building has been constructed over 1,800 square yards and has 22 rooms, including 11 classrooms, seven laboratories, the Principal’s office and six washrooms. An elevator (lift) has also been installed for the convenience of students. Earlier, a magnificent School of Eminence building was inaugurated at Inderpuri, Ludhiana.”

He further added, “The Inderpuri school is equipped with premium facilities, including a swimming pool and a tennis court. Student enrolment has increased from 1,320 to 1,788, reflecting growing public confidence in government schools.”

The Chief Minister noted, “The infrastructure of 200 government schools in Ludhiana district has been significantly upgraded. Nearly 3 lakh students are studying in government schools across the district. Ludhiana now has 16 Schools of Eminence, 11 Schools of Brilliance and 35 Schools of Happiness.”

He further said, “The state government has prioritised education and has taken path-breaking initiatives in the education sector to transform the lives of people. No freebie or concession cards can eliminate poverty or other social maladies in the state, but education is the key that can pull people out of this vicious cycle by raising their standard of living. Therefore, the government is tirelessly making efforts to improve the standard of education and empower the common people.”

The Chief Minister said, “Due to the strenuous efforts of the state government, Punjab has surpassed Kerala, Maharashtra and Delhi to secure the number one position in primary and middle-school education. The state government has upgraded primary and middle-school education, strengthened the system, introduced smart classrooms and provided advanced training to teachers. As a result of these efforts, Punjab is excelling in the school education sector and NITI Aayog has released new figures showing that Punjab has surpassed Kerala, Maharashtra and Delhi to secure the number one position in primary and middle-school education.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann pointed out, “For the last four years, the state government has focused on teacher training, modern teaching methods and smart classrooms, and today Punjab stands at the top. Earlier, Kerala held the top position, but now Punjab has claimed the number one rank with a huge margin. More such efforts will be made in the coming time. Education is the light that illuminates the world by dispelling darkness, and therefore the state government is laying special thrust on it.”

He said, “Our government firmly believes that every child deserves access to quality education irrespective of his or her economic background. Concerted efforts are being made to give further impetus to the education sector. The government’s initiatives are aimed at ensuring that children from common families get the same opportunities to excel as anyone else. Education is the strongest tool for empowering future generations and building a prosperous Punjab, and the state government will leave no stone unturned to strengthen it.”

The Chief Minister said, “When I assumed charge of office, Punjab was ranked 27th in school education. It is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that today the state has secured the number one position in this field. While only 80 students from government schools had qualified the NEET examination in 2021, the number has risen to 881 students in 2026, marking the highest-ever achievement by Punjab Government schools. Punjab also pioneered the concept of Parent-Teacher Meetings in government schools, with nearly 24 lakh parents participating. Around 20,000 government school students are being provided free bus transportation, including 12,000 girls.”

CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “In Ludhiana, 155 students have qualified the JEE and NEET examinations, while 47 students have cleared the Punjab State Talent Search Examination. Last year, 201 students from Ludhiana represented the district at the national level in various sporting events. They won a total of 25 medals, including seven gold medals, bringing pride to the district and the state.”

Earlier, students including Malika Singh, Keshav Kumar, Rahul, Aishpreet Kaur, Aksha, Sourabh, Aaradhna, Jashdeep Kaur, Lavi and others hailed the Chief Minister for taking path-breaking initiatives to give fillip to the education sector.
