Nagpur witnessed a tense situation as violence erupted in the city, prompting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to address the Assembly. He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible, regardless of caste or religion.

In his statement, CM Fadnavis pointed out that the violence appeared to be premeditated. He stated that people's emotions had been reignited following the release of the film Chhaava, which portrays the history of Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal. The Chief Minister firmly condemned the attack on police personnel and vowed that those involved would not be spared.

Chhaava Film and Its Alleged Role in Nagpur Violence

CM Devendra Fadnavis raised concerns over the role of Chhaava in triggering public emotions. He stated that after the film’s release, anger against Aurangzeb became more pronounced, leading to heightened tensions.

The movie, which depicts the struggles of Sambhaji Maharaj, has reportedly influenced public sentiment. This has led to protests and demonstrations, with certain groups expressing strong opposition to Aurangzeb’s legacy. The Chief Minister highlighted a possible pattern in the events and reassured that authorities would take necessary action to prevent further escalation.

What Led to the Nagpur Violence?

The violence in Nagpur reportedly started after a protest by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal members. The groups demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave and even staged a symbolic burning of a grave made of grass. Following this demonstration, the police registered a case against the protesters.

Later in the evening, a rumour spread that religious texts were used in the protest, which triggered another gathering. A crowd of nearly 250 people gathered near Attar Road after namaz, shouting slogans and threatening to set vehicles on fire. The police intervened, leading to clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers.

The scale of the violence in Nagpur was severe. According to CM Fadnavis, 12 two-wheelers were damaged, while four-wheelers, including a crane and two JCBs, were set on fire. Several people were also injured, with reports confirming that weapons such as swords and an axe were used in the attacks.

Additionally, nearly a trolley full of stones was found at the site, suggesting pre-planned violence. The Chief Minister disclosed that 33 policemen, including three senior officers, sustained injuries, and five civilians were attacked during the unrest.

CM Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony, emphasising that law and order must be upheld. He reiterated that attacks on police officers would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The government remains firm in its stance against those inciting violence, promising strict action against the offenders.
