Pak based terror group erupts over Sweden Quran burning, threatens to attack churches & Christians

Pakistan: On Sunday, the Pakistan-based extremist organization Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) issued threats to carry out assaults on Christians and churches within Pakistan. This reaction by the extremist organization s is a response to recent burning of Quran by an Iraqi refuge outside Central Mosque in Sweden’s Stockholm.

The group talked about suicide bombings specifically targeting members of the Christian minority of Pakistan. They also talked about collaborating with similar terrorist organizations in the region with the shared objective of targeting the Christian community. The mission is described as a retribution for the Quran incident that took place in Sweden during Eid.

Background

Ever since the 1990s, the extremist group has gained popularity for its attacks against the Shia Muslims in Pakistan. They have carried assaults on mosques as well as Shia processions. They have even fetched plans to kill Shia Clerics and figures in Pakistan.

After the United States declared ‘war on terror’ after the 9/11, the LeJ once again gained prominence. In response to Pakistan helping the US, the LeJ assisted terrorists who aimed to retaliate against Pakistan. Over the course of the war in Afghanistan and tribal areas of Pakistan , the LeJ established connections witt terrorist groups operating in the area.

The group’s actions were not only fueled by enmity against US and West but also by a desire to destabilize Pakistan’s cooperation with Western forces in the region.

LeJ and its attacks on minorities

Pakistan has experienced decades of intolerance towards minorities with the full blessings of mainstream political parties. Accusations of blasphemy like Quran burning, insulting the Prophet, or showing disrespect towards the religion is common in Pakistan.

A Chinese engineer once narrowly escaped harm while working on a joint CPEC project thanks to timely intervention by the army. In another instance Sri Lankan factory manager was brutally beaten and burned to death by his own employees.

There have been many instances of systematic violence against minorities in Pakistan. The recent murder of a Hindu doctor is indicative of religious intolerance systematically embedded in some groups of the country.
