Derek O’Brien: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a strong warning to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC). ECI posted on X that elections in West Bengal this time would be free from violence, fear, inducement and intimidation and without source jamming, chappa and booth jamming.

Mamata Banerjee After Filing Nomination

Banerjee has filed nomination from the Bhabanipur seat. She first contested from the same seat in 2011 after ending the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Banerjee would fight the Bhabanipur seat against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Banerjee greeted party workers and was seen her trademark simple attire. The sitting West Bengal CM walked nearly 800 meters to the Alipore Survey Building for completing the nomination formalities.

Derek O’Brien Asked To “Get Lost”

In another development, TMC leader Derek O’Brien commented that ECI asked him to “get lost” after just 5 minutes of a meeting. The ECI defended itself by saying that Derek O’Brien asked Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to not speak and even shouted at him.

During a morning meeting today, Menaka Guruswamy, Sagarika Ghose, O’Brien and Saket Gokhale attended the meeting with the ECI. This was after more than 27 lakh names were struck off from West Bengal’s voter list before the two-phase West Bengal elections on April 23 and 29. It was commented by the ECI that the CEC requested O’Brien to properly maintain the Commission Room’s decorum, stating that indecent behaviour and shouting were not appropriate.

Leaders from the TMC rejected the allegations outrightly, terming them “false and ridiculous”. They went on to challenge the ECI to make public a record of the meeting.

In the 2021 Assembly Elections, the TMC party secured a landslide win with 213 seats; BJP emerged the second-best party with 77 seats. The Left Front and Congress failed to win any seats in the 2021 Assembly Elections.

Making such a comment in front of everyone during an award show — “No matter how much fluctuation there is between dollars and rupees, you still have to repay your debt” — is not humour, but an insult. Every person has their own dignity, and such remarks hurt the unity and respect of the industry.”

AICWA also said that struggles do not last forever. “If their time is not good today, so what — tomorrow it will surely be better. They are going through some difficult circumstances, but it should be remembered that every night is followed by a morning. Struggle is temporary, but talent and hard work always endure. They have made the entire country laugh with their characters, bringing smiles to tear-streaked faces. But if that same artist is in pain today and there’s no one to wipe away their tears — then it’s something for all of us to think about.”

The organisation concluded by saying, “It is also unfortunate that Rajpal Yadav is often made an easy target, just because he remains calm and maintains his dignity. Mistaking his silence for weakness is wrong — that is his true strength.”

The controversy began during a segment at the Screen Awards 2026. Saurabh Dwivedi made a joke referring to Rajpal Yadav’s reported Rs 9 crore cheque-bounce case.

India Iran Advisory: A new advisory has been issued by the Indian Embassy in Iran asking nationals to immediately leave the Islamic Republic of Iran. A new helpline number has been launched to facilitate the process. The advisory has been issued possibly because India is expecting that the 2-week ceasefire would NOT last for long and massive airstrikes by USA and Israel on Iran may soon be on the cards.

The advisory reads that Indian nationals in Iran are strongly urged to immediately leave Iran using the suggested routes and in coordination with the Indian Embassy in Iran.

India issued new emergency numbers for nationals. They are +98912810915, +989128109109, +989128109102 and +989932179359. The email for contact has been mentioned as cons.tehran@mea.gov.in.

Yesterday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs urged Indian nationals in Iran to immediately seek shelter and avoid further movements. The Ministry urged Indians in Iran to remain indoors, coordinate any movement on the Iranian highways with the Indian embassy and avoid all military and electric installations along with upper floors of multi-storey buildings.

Is Ceasefire Breakdown On Cards?

The new advisory possibly hints at a likely breakdown of the 2-week ceasefire between USA, Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Many believed that USA and Israel are not likely to honour their ceasefire decision for long as the terms are not favourable to them. Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of Iran, remarked that the passage of ships and oil tankers via the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted under the supervision of Iranian military. Apart from Zakir Khan’s remark, another moment from the same awards night also created controversy. Journalist Sourabh Dwivedi made a comment about actor Rajpal Yadav, which many people found offensive.

He said, “Dollar ka rate kitna bhi upar neeche ho jaaye apko paise utne hi vapas lautaane hain (No matter how much the dollar rate fluctuates, you have to return the same amount of money)”.

This comment received strong backlash across the country. Soon, Salman Khan came forward to support Rajpal Yadav. He assured that the actor would continue to get work.

Later, Rajpal Yadav addressed the issue himself. He asked fans not to troll the journalist and said he was not hurt by the comment.

This clearly suggests that the post was not originally made by Pakistan but possibly by the Trump administration. It seems that the post was forwarded to the Pakistan administration that unknowingly posted it without making any edits to it.

A user on X questioned why the tweet’s initial version included some draft notes, referring to the Pakistani Prime Minister, describing Shehbaz Sharif as “Pakistan’s PM.”

Another user commented that Donald Trump is literally dictating Pakistan and Sharif is acting like his puppet. Many others on social media platforms commented how Pakistan is being run by these lunatics who cannot even share a forwarded post.

US Israel Iran War: United States President Donald Trump has announced his decision to step back from major escalation with the Islamic Republic of Iran just hours before the deadline for Iran to concede.

Trump agreed to a ceasefire of two weeks to de-escalate the conflict lasting for 40 days. In another development, Tehran agreed to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz conditionally.

US Israel Iran War-Ceasefire Conditions

The United States would hold targeting Iranian power plants, bridges and other civilian infrastructure. This decision was made after Washington agreed in principle to a 10-point peace proposal of Tehran. Washington and Tehran would now meet on April 10 in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, Iran has remarked that it is evaluating the request by USA for negotiations based on its proposal that includes 15 points. Iran also announced that safe passage via the Strait of Hormuz would now be a possibility through coordination with the Armed Forces of Iran and with due consideration of a series of technical limitations.

Is India’s Fuel Crisis Over?

After the ceasefire was announced, oil prices went down below $100 a barrel after a long time. US Stock Futures and Asian markets jumped. US crude oil dropped 14.3 percent to $96.83 a barrel and Brent crude oil futures dropped 13.3 percent to $94.74. This could bring temporary relief to India but its fuel crisis is far from over as of now.

On Wednesday, Indian government bonds surged; the benchmark 6.48 percent 2035 bond yield was at 6.9177 percent. In another development, the Reserve Bank of India announced that the repo rate would stay unchanged at 5.25 percent. It was also announced that the RBI’s policy stance would stay neutral.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra remarked that the STF (Standing Deposit Facility) rate under the LAF (Liquidity Adjustment Facility) shall stand adjusted to 5 percent and the MSF (Marginal Standing Facility) and bank rate to 5.5 percent.
