Madras High Court issues notice to AR Rahman for alleged tax evasion

The Madras High Court, on Friday, issued a notice to singer-composer AR Rahman for a petition that alleged that he has been routing his income of over Rs 3 crore through his AR Rahman Foundation to exempt from paying tax.

According to several media reports, the singer has been summoned by the High Court to explain the allegations levelled against him.

The Oscar-winning music composer received an income of Rs 3.47 crore in the financial year 2011-2012 or composing an exclusive ringtones for a UK based telecom company, T R Senthil Kumar, the senior standing counsel for the income tax department, said in a statement.

According to Kumar, the contract lasted for three-years and Rahman allegedly asked the UK based company to send payment to his charitable trust to evade tax.

“The income which is taxable must be received by Rahman. After due deduction of tax, it can be transferred to the trust. But the same cannot be routed through the trust as income to the charitable trust is exempted under the Income Tax Act,” a report in Times of India quoted the IT Department counsel as saying.

The department said that charitable trust did not have a license under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act at the time the payment was made, therefore, Rs 3.47 crore was taxable amount and cannot be considered as foreign contributions.

In February this year, the Centre approved the AR Rahman foundation with FCRA license. The trust was registered as being for “cultural, social and educational purposes” under the FCRA.

Indian Railways to start 80 new trains from September 12, check out the complete list

The Indian Railways will run 80 new special trains from Saturday in addition to the 230 special trains that are already operating across the country. The bookings of these newly introduced special trains have already been in motion since September 10 at Indian Railways website. The trains will be fully reserved and tickets can also be bought from station counters.

The railways resumed its operation in a graded manner in May after being suspended for two months due to nationwide lockdown that was enforced on March 25 in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. 230 special trains were introduced in various stages of unlock phase. Out of these, 30 are special Rajdhani Type trains and 200 are Special Mail Express trains.

“In addition to the 40 pairs announced recently, more regular trains are expected to be run from Odisha to meet the demand,” an official said.

Check out the complete list here:

Recently, Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav, said that railways will monitor all the trains that are currently in operation to determine which trains have a long waiting list. “Wherever there is a demand for a particular train, wherever the waiting list is long, we will run a clone train ahead of the actual train, so that passengers can travel,” he said. The key factor in deciding the 80 new trains was the fact that there were many stations from where the migrant workers are going back to their workplace, Yadav said.

“Many of these trains are running in the reverse direction of the Shramik Special trains. So, they (people) are leaving their homes and going to their workplace.

“We are monitoring the occupancy of trains and will run more trains as per demand. Among the 230 trains, the occupancy of 12 is very less. We are running them, but will reduce the number of coaches,” he added.

These new 80 trains will connect Delhi-Indore, Yesvantpur-Gorakhpur, Puri-Ahmedabad, Delhi- Bengaluru among other routes. Apart from these, several trains which will connect small cities to Delhi are also being introduced in this phase.

Railways move has come after the announcement of several national-level examinations to facilitate the candidates.

What’s happening to cricket in SA is catastrophic: Kevin Pietersen

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen termed the current crisis in Cricket South Africa (CSA) as a ‘horror show’ and said it would end cricket in the country. The Confederation of South Africa Sports and the Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has suspended Cricket South Africa (CSA) because it wants to investigate mismanagement and corruption in this cricketing body.

“Goodness me! What’s happening to cricket in SA is catastrophic. I feel so sorry for the many amazing people that work in that organization and to all the players that are suffering at the hands of this disaster! Sport unites SA! This horror show is finishing cricket!” wrote Kevin Pieterson

https://twitter.com/KP24/status/1304379539850752000?s=20

This action of the Olympic Committee has blown the South African Cricket Board, which has been accused of corruption and racial discrimination. This means that now CSA will have no one to conduct daily operations. This also suspends South Africa from the international cricket.

Universal Brotherhood Day

Universal Brotherhood Day is observed every year on 11 September to commemorate the historic speech delivered by Indian thinker and spiritualist Swami Vivekananda in Chicago in 1893. This year marks the 127th year of iconic speech.

Over 127 years since Swami Vivekananda took the stage on that fateful day in September, his words continue to wield immense significance, particularly given the religious discord the world remains beset with. Vivekananda’s vision was fashioned on assimilation as a means by which to enhance one’s own spiritual growth.

Speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893,

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world, I thank you in the name of the mother of religions, and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honour of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration.

I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth.

I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny.

I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: “As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.”

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.”

Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair.

Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time has come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

He concluded the speech with “In the face of this evidence, if anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him from the bottom of my heart, and point out to him that upon the banner of every religion will soon be written, in spite of resistance: ‘Help and not Fight’, ‘Assimilation and not Destruction’, ‘Harmony and Peace and not Dissension’.

This date is still one of the important ones for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to remember the day. He, in his tweet, mentioned, “Today, on 11th September we in India mark two important milestones. The Jayanti of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. The day Swami Vivekananda delivered his outstanding address in Chicago. These great men have a lot to teach the entire humanity.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah too remembered Swami Vivekananda’s speech on this special day. He tweeted,

IPL 2020: Ambati Rayudu is an ideal player to bat at Number 3 says Scott Styris

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels Ambati Rayudu is the ideal player to bat at number three for Chennai Super Kings after Suresh Raina’s exit from the upcoming IPL.

Before the start of the 13th phase of IPL, Raina decided to withdraw citing personal reasons and this happened when the Chennai Super Kings squad had 13 COVID-19 positive cases.

“Personally, I’d put Rayudu in there to take that spot,” Styris said on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’.

“I know that the CSK squad is deep, they’ve got a lot of options at the top, but I also believe that as much as the pressure is now on to find that No.3, it’s just probably the most challenging time that I can look for anyway for CSK.

“And in particular, the leadership of this group, I think with (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni and Stephen Fleming, it’s up to them now to bring the group together, now that they have lost Raina and Harbhajan (Singh).”

Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, CSK will be looking to march the tournament in search of their fourth title and draw level with Mumbai Indians.

The two-day conclave has been organised by Ministry of Education as a part of the ‘Shiksha Parv’, the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO) said in a statement.

The Prime Minister in his speech emphasised on the value of practical learning. He also mentioned that marksheets shouldn’t be our parameters to judge students’ potential.

The PM also assured that a national curriculum framework will be developed till 2022.

Here are the key highlights of PM Modi’s speech on “School Education in 21st Century” under NEP-2020:

  • Marksheet became ‘pressure sheet’ for students and ‘prestige sheet’ for families, NEP’s goal is to remove this pressure: PM Modi.
  • A national curriculum framework will be developed; students should have a new curriculum in 2022 when nation marks 75th year of Independence.
  • Every region of the world has changed in the last three decades. Every system has changed. There is hardly any aspect of our life in these three decades which is the same as before. But the path on which society moves towards the future, our education system, it was still running on the old pattern.
  • MyGov received more than than 1.5 million suggestions about implementing the National Education Policy. These suggestions will help implement the policy in a more effective way.
  • We have to advance our students with 21st Century Skills. These will be: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Curiosity, Communication.
  • We need to understand one scientific thing that language is the medium of education and not a study itself. Whichever language the child can easily learn, learn things, the same language should be the language of learning.
  • Do not limit class rooms to the walls: PM Narendra Modi said.

The education festival also knwon as the ‘Shiksha Parv’ is being celebrated from September 8-25 to recognize teachers as well as take New Education Policy forward.
