IPL 2020: Tata joins Unacademy, Reliance Jio to bid for sponsorship rights

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League is scheduled to commence on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as said by people with knowledge of the matter.

With the exit of the Vivo as title sponsor because of anti-Chinese sentiment in the wake of border hostilities, giant Indian companies like Reliance Jio Infocomm, Tata Sons, Patanjali, Byju’s and Unacademy have expressed an interest in bidding of the title sponsorship.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which organises the IPL, called for expressions of interest (EoIs) for the rights on August 10 with August 14 as the deadline for submissions. All those who have submitted EoIs may not necessarily bid for the title rights, said the people cited above.

“The board has received interest from some of the biggest corporates like Tata Sons and Reliance Jio, as well as Patanjali and two large edutech companies. We always believed there is going to be a great interest in the IPL title sponsorship,” a senior BCCI official told.

According to the latest updates and developments, it is reported that the board contacted big corporate houses such as Tata, Reliance and Adani as well as companies like Amazon, Byju’s, Dream 11 and others to find a replacement for Vivo.

Vivo was in contract with the board for a tenure of 5 years until 2022. In according to the deal, Vivo had agreed to pay the board Rs 2,190 crore. However, a day after it was decided that IPL 2020 will be played in the UAE on account of Covid-19, the BCCI was criticized for allowing a Chinese company to be the title sponsor of the league in the aftermath of the dispute between the two nations along the border. Amid calls in India to boycott Chinese products, Vivo and the BCCI mutually agreed to suspend the deal for IPL 2020, with a clause to resume it next season.

The board also clarified that the highest bid will not necessarily be the winner.

“BCCI would not be obliged to award the rights to the bidder that indicated the willingness to pay the highest fee in the course of discussions with the board after submitting the EoI,” the board said. The decision will also depend on other factors, including the manner in which the party intends to exploit the rights and the potential impact of this on the IPL brand.

Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka on Friday said the state government was taking steps towards banning SDPI, following its “direct involvement” in the recent violence in the city, and all the required information is being collected in this connection.

“The world now realises what our sages had said long ago: the global community is but one family; “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam”. However, even while the world community needs to fight together against the greatest challenge before humanity, some in our neighbourhood tried to carry out their misadventure of expansion,” Mr. Kovind said.

On 15-16 June, the violent clash between India and China resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and casualties of 43 Chinese soldiers. Ever since then, the two countries are engaged in verbal spat. India’s top officials have multiple times tried to discontinue the rift, but China hasn’t taken any steps to dis-engage the rivalry.

Independence Day 2020: PM Modi extends wishes ahead of speech at Red Fort

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wished all the countrymen on the occasion of 74th Independence Day before hoisting the tricolour from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi.

“Happy Independence Day to all fellow Indians. Jai Hind!” PM Modi posted on Twitter minutes before his speech at the Red Fort.

He will soon be delivering the customary address to the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument, Red Fort. Before that, he will receive the Guard of Honour contingent, consisting of one officer and 24 men each from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Delhi Police.

The event at the Red Fort will be relatively different than the ideal in the wake of coronavirus pandemic which has infected over 2 million people in the country. Instead of general public and school children, 1,500 corona warriors, including 500 police personnel have been invited to the event.

The Home Ministry in its advisory has asked states to avoid large social gathering and instead webcast the celebration.

SC finds Prashant Bhushan guilty for contempt of the court

Supreme Court has found advocate Prashant Bhushan guilty for contempt of the court for his irrational tweet against SA Bobde, the Cheif Justice of India, and the Supreme Court.

Justice Arun Mishra directed the verdict along with other two members in his committee of three. The head justice said, “Bhushan was found to have committed “serious” contempt, and the hearing for punishment in the case will be held on August 20,” as quoted by News18.

Earlier Prashant Bhushan had commented on a picture of Chief Justice Bobde on social media where he asked a question to the CJI that why he was not wearing a helmet while driving his Harley Davidson but the Cheif Justice was not riding his at this time and his bike was on the stand.

In an affidavit submitted by Prashant Bhushan on August 2, Bhushan regretted asking why the Justice Bobde was not wearing a helmet since the bike was on the stand and apologised for it

“At the outset, I admit that I did not notice that the bike was on a stand and therefore wearing a helmet was not required. I, therefore, regret that part of my tweet. However, I stand by the remaining part of what I have stated in my tweet…” the lawyer said in his affidavit submitted on August 2.

The three-member committee of Justice Arun Mishara, Justice B R Gavai and Krishna Murari observed that Prashant’s action on social media could disrepute the administration of justice and can undermine the dignity of the Supreme Court.

The punishment of contempt of court can put Bhushan in jail for almost six months and including a heavy fine.

Broad was seen using an inhaler in the first Test match against Pakistan

Stuart Broad was found in some sort of discomfort on Day 1 of the first Test match between England and Pakistan. Broad called for an inhaler while bowling his fourth over of his spell.

Its a fact that Broad is suffering from asthma for years and he didn’t keep it hidden is not a secret for anyone. The 34-year-old had revealed this in the 2015 Ashes series.

Even after his struggle in breathing, Broad stood tall against the Pakistani batsmen and bowled spell.

Broad has raised his power as a supreme and dependent bowler of his side and since the last 14 years, he is fighting with his half lung even then he took more than 500 Test wickets. He kept his asthma hidden for a few years but many of his team-mates knew about this but they kept quiet.

“One night we were asked to provide a piece of information about ourselves that no one else knew, with the notion of being open with each other,” Broad had once written in the Daily Mail.

“I shocked the boys a little when I told them I only had one and a half lungs because I was born three months premature,” he added.

What are PM Modi’s plans for new and safe Jammu and Kashmir?

The development at ground level is still not visible even a year after the revocation of the 370 and 35A from Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may announce some major projects in Jammu and Kashmir, which will include high-tech and environment-friendly ‘Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Ministry of Urban Development and Jammu and Kashmir administration are currently working on various developments in the Union Territory. Prime Minister is personally keeping an eye on the working commitee.

On August 5 exactly a year the historic revocation of 370 and 35A GC Murmu resigned from his L-G post in Jammu and Kashmir. BJP veteran leader Manoj Sinha is appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after replacing GC Murmu.

The development includes a structure to restore the old charm of the valley.

“The area around Dal Lake is densely populated and its glory has diminished over the years. The threat of pollution and large-scale tourism have made it fragile and caused environment degradation. Further, there have been encroachments around the Lake. So, the plan will include reducing the heavy burden from the area around it,” a source said as quoted by Indian Express.

Many BJP leaders have claimed the valley had remained backward for the years only because of Article 370 and 35A. The BJP had already assured that the changes would bring the change and improve the infrastructure, grass-root democracy, and help the valley to fight against the terrorism spread by the neighbor.
