Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s tweet on Rohit Sharma’s weight created a massive stir on social media. Several cricket fans and political figures reacted strongly to her remarks, accusing her of fat-shaming the Indian captain. While the Congress party distanced itself, and BJP criticised the comment, now the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also spoken out on the issue.

BCCI Slams Shama Mohamed’s Comment as ‘Very Unfortunate’

While speaking to NDTV, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia strongly condemned Shama Mohamed’s remarks. He said: "Very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment.”

Saikia emphasised that Rohit Sharma’s achievements as a cricketer speak for themselves, and such remarks about his physical appearance are unnecessary and disrespectful.

What Really Happened? Shama Mohamed’s Tweet on Rohit Sharma

The controversy started when Shama Mohamed posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "As a player, Rohit Sharma is overweight. He needs to lose weight and is certainly India’s most unimpressive captain."

Her comment was met with severe backlash, with fans accusing her of fat-shaming and undermining Rohit Sharma’s legacy as a cricketer.

After deleting her tweet, Shama Mohamed defended herself, claiming she never intended to fat-shame Rohit Sharma. She explained, "It was a general tweet about a player’s fitness, not body-shaming. I believe every athlete should be fit, and I merely pointed out what I observed."

However, her clarification did little to calm the outrage, as many continued to criticise her stance.

Political Controversy Surrounding Her Remark

Shama Mohamed’s comment did not just spark reactions from cricket fans but also led to political debates. While the Congress party distanced itself from her remarks, urging her to delete the post, the BJP took the opportunity to attack Congress over the issue.
