Weather Update January 17 2026: The India Meteorological Department has predicted bone-chilling cold for Northern states and rain for Southern states.

Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, eastern Rajasthan and Punjab may notice moderate rainfall. Chamoli and Uttarkashi are likely to receive moderate rainfall. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are likely to witness bone-chilling cold waves, especially during the early morning and late evening/night hours.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday underscored the need to strengthen trade relations with Canada, particularly British Columbia, to expand cooperation that delivers tangible benefits for businesses and people on both sides.

During a meeting with the Premier of British Columbia David Eby, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Canada has always been a strong partner for India and Punjab, and we deeply value this relationship. We appreciate the strong trade and investment ties between Canada and Punjab and look forward to strengthening this foundation further.” He added, “Punjab is fully prepared and enthusiastic to collaborate with Canadian businesses in sectors of mutual importance.”

Highlighting Punjab’s economic strengths, the Chief Minister said, “Punjab is a leader in agro-processing, textiles, engineering goods, IT services, and renewable energy. With robust infrastructure and a skilled workforce proficient in the English language, Punjab offers an ideal destination for Canadian investors.”

He further noted, “Punjab ranks among the leading states in the country in Ease of Doing Business, and through Invest Punjab, we provide a single-window clearance system along with comprehensive investor support.”

The Chief Minister pointed out that British Columbia’s expertise aligns closely with Punjab’s development priorities. “British Columbia’s strengths in sustainable farming, food security, and greenhouse technologies align perfectly with Punjab’s agricultural modernization goals. We foresee significant opportunities in precision farming, post-harvest systems, and value-added food processing,” he said.

On education, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated, “Education and skill development is another promising area where partnerships with Canadian universities in research and vocational training can have a transformative impact.”

Emphasising sector-wise opportunities, the Chief Minister said, “In healthcare and life sciences, there are immense opportunities for Canadian firms in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and telemedicine.” He added, “Renewable energy is a shared priority, and Punjab welcomes joint ventures in solar parks and bio-energy projects.”

Referring to technology, he said, “In IT and digital transformation, Punjab has strong potential for collaboration in cyber security, artificial intelligence, and agri-tech projects.”

On manufacturing and trade, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Manufacturing and engineering is another high-potential area. Canada’s expertise in agricultural machinery and precision engineering can integrate well with Punjab’s industrial clusters.”

He added, “Punjab’s agricultural exports such as wheat, rice, kinnow, litchi, and processed food products are in high demand in the Canadian market, strongly supported by the large Indian diaspora living there.” He also proposed collaboration in textiles, saying, “Canadian companies can join hands with Punjab to develop high-quality textiles and apparel that complement their fashion and retail sectors.”

Stressing the role of the diaspora, the Chief Minister said, “The Punjabi diaspora in Canada serves as a strong bridge for commercial and cultural exchange. The Punjab Government aims to deepen these ties further through cultural and educational programs.”

Inviting Canada to participate as a Partner Country at the Progressive Punjab Investors Summit 2026, he said, “PPIS 2026 will include special business delegations, sectoral sessions, and high-level roundtable conferences, further strengthening trade and cultural exchange.”

The Chief Minister also invited leading Canadian universities to explore establishing campuses in Mohali. “As an education and skill development hub for Punjab and neighbouring states, Mohali offers significant advantages for Canadian institutions,” he said. He added, “Our objective is to attract Canadian technology and service companies to establish IT and ITeS operations and Global Capability Centers in Mohali.”

Assuring full support, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “We will provide tailor-made investment facilitation to Canadian investors. I extend a warm invitation to Canadian delegations to participate in the Punjab Investor Summit to be held from March 13 to 15, 2026 at Plaksha University, Mohali.” Expressing optimism, he said, “This partnership will herald a new era of bilateral cooperation and give impetus to the overall development of both Punjab and British Columbia.”

Meanwhile, the Premier of British Columbia thanked the Chief Minister for the warm hospitality. He said, “The hospitality extended by Punjab has made my visit truly memorable.” Emphasising people-to-people ties, he added, “Punjab always resides in the hearts of Punjabis living in British Columbia, and this relationship between our people should be further strengthened.” Expressing enthusiasm for closer engagement, the Premier said, “We are keen to strengthen business ties with Punjab and will work to explore opportunities for mutual exchange in areas such as skill development, energy, and other sectors.”

Nvidia Chips for AI: Donald Trump has imposed a tariff 25 percent on specific artificial intelligence (AI) chips such as the Nvidia H200 AI processor and a similar semiconductor from AMD called the MI325X.

Citing critical national security threats, Trump made the decision after an investigation spanning nine months under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

The tariff proclamation said the United States of America presently fully manufactures only about 10 percent of the chips it requires that makes it excessively reliant on foreign supply chains. It added that this reliance is a considerable national and economic security risk.

Tariff Exemptions-Nvidia Chips for AI

In a fact sheet, the US White House said that the tariffs would not be applied to derivative devices and chips that are imported for US datacentres, non-datacentre consumer applications, start-ups, US public sector applications and non-datacentre civil industrial applications.

Many industry experts believe that this move by the Trump administration would turbocharge domestic chip fabs by exempting US supply chain imports. It was added that the Taiwan-made GPUs by Nvidia would face import duties before global resale, including to China.

Some believe that Trump may impose broader and additional tariffs on imports of semiconductors as well as their derivative products. This could be done to incentivize manufacturing in the domestic sector.

Impact on Global AI Markets

It is believed that while AMD would eye gains, the Ascend chips of Huawei could possibly feast on the retaliatory hunger of China. This could soon translate to CHIPS Act 2.0 funding explosion, luring GlobalFoundries and Intel to build stateside. However, there may be a possible downside. A bifurcated artificial intelligence world featuring premium versus cheap Asian alternatives can stifle global collaboration.

There may be some chances of a market recovery by Q2 if China blinks but given the counter-threats of China (like rare earth curbs), this does not seem a possibility in the near future.

The one-minute-eight-second teaser presents a soft and emotional love story. It opens with Junaid Khan’s character admiring Sai Pallavi’s Meera. He says, “Your smile, Meera. I like it a lot. I don’t know…if I can win your heart or not. But what’s the point of dreams…if they aren’t beyond our reach.”

The visuals show them spending time together, travelling through scenic hill locations, sharing quiet moments and also appearing tense in parts.

Congress leader Anurag Dhanda has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioning whether it will apologise for what he termed an “unpardonable insult to Sikh Gurus”, amid a controversy surrounding a video circulated against Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Atishi.

Dhanda’s remarks come after BJP leader Kapil Mishra shared a video accusing Atishi of using “shameful language” during a session of the Delhi Assembly when the House was allegedly paying respect to Sikh Gurus. The video was widely circulated on social media platforms, triggering political outrage.

Court Declares Video ‘Doctored’

However, according to Dhanda, the claims made through the video have now been legally discredited. A court, relying on a forensic report, has found that the video shared with subtitles was “doctored and manipulated.”

As per the court’s observation, the edited video had the potential to incite public disorder, prompting strict directions under Rule 3(d) of the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

Platforms Directed to Remove Content

The court ordered Meta Platforms (Facebook and Instagram), X (formerly Twitter), and Telegram to remove the allegedly offensive content linked to specific URLs. The order mandated that the content be taken down immediately and no later than 24 hours from the receipt of the directive.

The court noted that the altered subtitles and edited presentation misrepresented the actual context of the Assembly proceedings, making the content misleading and inflammatory.

Political Fallout Intensifies

Reacting to the development, Anurag Dhanda called the video “completely fake and doctored”, accusing the BJP of deliberately spreading misinformation to target opposition leaders and malign constitutional institutions.

He questioned whether the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would take responsibility or issue an apology for allegedly promoting content that disrespects Sikh Gurus and misleads the public.

BJP Yet to Respond

As of now, there has been no official response from Kapil Mishra or the BJP regarding the court’s findings. The issue has further escalated political tensions in Delhi, with opposition parties alleging misuse of social media to polarise public sentiment.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday highlighted the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in transforming India’s sports ecosystem, saying that a healthy body is the foundation of a strong and empowered nation.

Speaking in a video message, CM Yogi said the Prime Minister has inspired the country to understand how physical fitness, discipline, and sports contribute directly to nation-building. He stressed that India’s approach towards sports has witnessed a decisive shift after 2014.

Sports Were Not a Priority Before 2014: CM Yogi Adityanath

CM Yogi Adityanath said that before 2014, sports and competitive athletics were not a key priority in government policy. He noted that the lack of international-level infrastructure and institutional support had negatively affected Indian athletes for decades.

“Our players suffered due to the absence of proper policies and world-class infrastructure. Sports was not treated as a national priority,” he said.

Khelo India and Fit India Changed the Landscape

Highlighting initiatives launched under the Modi government, Yogi Adityanath said programmes such as Khelo India and the Fit India Movement have fundamentally changed how sports are viewed in the country.

“After 2014, the Modi government brought sports to the centre of national policy. Through Khelo India and Fit India, we are moving towards self-reliance in sports,” he said.

He added that the Prime Minister has inspired not just elite athletes but also players at the village level, ensuring grassroots participation and talent identification.

CM Yogi also referred to India’s ancient traditions, saying that India’s ancestors placed great importance on sports, fitness, and physical discipline. He said these values are deeply rooted in Indian culture and are now being revived through modern policies.

“Our Vedas emphasised the importance of health. All resources in life can be achieved only through a healthy body,” he said.

“A disciplined life and a healthy body empower an individual, and when citizens are healthy, the nation automatically becomes stronger,” the Chief Minister said.
