What is the latest Madurai Temple Lamp Row verdict?
The latest Madurai Temple Lamp Row verdict was pronounced by a division bench of Justices G Jayachandran and KK Ramakrishnan. The bench disposed of a bath of appeals that were filed by the Executive Officer of the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, the Madurai City Police Commissioner and the Madurai District Collector.
The bench had previously reserved its judgment for December 18 after detailed arguments from all involved parties were heard. The appeals arose after Justice Swaminathan passed an order allowing a petition seeking directions for lighting the ceremonial lamp at the hillstop stone pillar on the occasion of Karthigai Deepam.
The state government however refused to implement the order citing possible law-and-order concerns.
The court in its ruling came down strongly on the state’s stand and the other appellants. It was observed by the bench that it was “ridiculous and hard to believe” that the “mighty state” of Tamil Nadu could possibly claim that a lamp’s lighting would lead to a disturbance of public peace. The court added that such a position would not be accepted. The court went on to criticize a “mischievous submission” that the stone pillar belonged to the dargah.
The court also said the practice of deepam lighting at an elevated place is well recognized. The Judges added the unfounded fears of public disharmony and peace disturbances were only meant to create mistrust between communities.
The court said the Madurai District Collector has been directed to supervise the entire event.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s party, DMK, said it would thoroughly analyze the verdict before making any decision on the next course of action.

Delhi Police remarked they are aware of the objectionable slogans and the incident. It was added that an inquiry is presently underway.
Raised at an event titled “Godzilla Dhaba,” the slogans were made at the JNU Campus near Sabarmati Hostel.
It was claimed by sources that JNU Students’ Union Joint Secretary Danish Ali and Secretary Sunil were present at the venue when the objectionable slogans were raised. Several students who were linked to left wing associations were also present at the venue.
Aditi Mishra, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president, remarked that a protest is held every year by students to condemn the violence that erupted on 5 January 2020 at the JNU campus.
ABVP Condemns Slogans
ABVP Vice President Manish Choudhary while criticizing the event said it is not right to blame the PM and the Home Minister after the SC verdict.
In a post on X, BJP leader and minister Kapil Mishra said the snakelets are writhing in pain when the heads of snakes are being crushed. Mishra went on to remark that rioters, terrorists and Naxalites at JNU are frustrated because terrorists are being dealt with, Naxalites are being eliminated and the rioters are being identified by the SC.
The Rajasthan High Court denied Vikram Bhatt’s bail request in a case where he is accused of cheating and stealing money. The court said that the nature of the claims suggests that there may have been a criminal purpose, which means that there should be more investigation.
Bhatt said that the argument was caused by differences over the contract that covered the movie and the money. But the court didn’t think the problem was only legal.
