Recently, reports emerged of a hantavirus-related incident aboard a cruise ship. Experts are now claiming that medical Hantavirus is not the new COVID even though it is highly lethal on a case-by-case basis, especially if diagnosis and treatment are delayed.

Dr Puneet Misra, Professor of Community Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, remarked that Hantavirus infections are not new to the scientific community. However, public awareness remains low, which can lead to panic, misinformation and delayed recognition of symptoms.

What Exactly Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus disease is caused by a group of viruses that are primarily spread through rodents such as rats and mice. Humans become infected when they inhale virus particles present in rodent urine, droppings or saliva. The infection may also spread when contaminated dust particles become airborne, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

Dr Puneet Misra explains that Hantavirus disease is a viral disease spread by a group of viruses and the recent episode, which has alarmed the public, happened on a cruise, and this infection is not new. Misra added that COVID was a new virus and we did not know anything about COVID while the mode of transmission was through the respiratory route. Misra added Hantavirus spreads through rodents, rats and mice.

In the video, the Hindu Rashtra Dal Supremo Pinki Chaudhary could be seen organizing a free langar for hungry people. However, he snatches the langar plate from a Muslim man saying that Muslims should not eat at his langar and no Mullah should come to eat.

The incident drew widespread condemnation from several netizens who accused Pinki Chaudhary of religious discrimination. Social media users commented that langar organizers should never discriminate between anyone based on their religion as langar is a service to the God and everyone is equal before the God.

A user wrote, “A langar is meant to feed the hungry, not feed hatred. Snatching food from someone because of their religion is disgraceful and inhuman. If humanity disappears from charity, then what remains sacred anymore?” Another commented, “Pinki Chaudhary turned an act of seva into an act of discrimination. No religion teaches people to humiliate the hungry in public. This behavior insults the very spirit of langar itself.”

Another user commented, “Feeding the poor should unite people, not divide them. Denying food to someone because they are Muslim shows shocking intolerance.  Compassion without equality is not compassion at all.” A user wrote, “The saddest part is that this happened during a langar, a place symbolizing equality and service. Snatching a plate from a hungry man is not strength, it is cruelty.   Humanity should always come before hatred.”

According to the state tourism department, the plans would also include strong emphasis on local culture and art. For instance, ISBT walls would feature murals that have been inspired by religious themes and local folk art. They would also include visually appealing and culturally meaningful landscapes. Furthermore, Vasudha Vatika would include a combination of spirituality, nature and Uttarakhand’s traditional aesthetics.

Symbols associated with Lord Vishnu would prominently be featured. Hundreds of commuters visit these stalls daily for quick, affordable snacks. However, this bold act, happening in full view of railway employees and RPF personnel, raises alarming questions: Is this “green” poison entering passengers’ bloodstreams without any checks? 

The video quickly went viral on social media. User @NCIBHQ and @RailwaySeva tagged top officials like @RailMinIndia, @AshwiniVaishnaw, @RPF_INDIA, @bihar_police, and @Drm_kir. “Passengers’ lives are being toyed with. Who’s responsible?” the post asks.
