US-India ties on ‘high priority’: Joe Biden

Joe Biden will have a “high priority” US-India relationship, his campaign member said on Saturday adding if Biden elected as the President then he will have “no tolerance” for cross-border terrorism in Pakistan.

“Biden will deliver on his long-standing belief that India and the United States are natural partners, and a Biden Administration will place a high priority on continuing to strengthen the US-India relationship,” the campaign said as quoted saying by Times of India.

“No common global challenge can be solved without India and the United States working as responsible partners, Biden’s campaign said on Joe Biden’s agenda for the Indian American community,” it added.
On immigration, Biden will “preserve family unification as a core principle of our immigration system.”

“He will support first reforming the temporary visa system for high-skill, specialty jobs to protect wages and workers, then expanding the number of visas offered and eliminating the limits on employment-based green cards by country, which have kept so many Indian families in waiting for too long. Biden will restore and defend the naturalization process for green cardholders,” the document read.

“Biden will appoint leaders at the Department of Justice who will prioritize the prosecution of hate crimes, and he will order his Justice Department to focus additional resources to combat hate crimes — including religion-based hate crimes — and to confront white nationalist terrorism,” the policy document read.

“As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, the United States and India are bound together by our shared democratic values: fair and free elections, equality under the law, and the freedom of expression and religion. These core principles have endured throughout each of our nations’ histories and will continue to be the source of our strength in the future,” the document said.

Biden ensured that South Asian Americans are represented in his administration, and his Vice-Presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris, whose family emigrated from India to America to build a life in the United States, will help the making his campaign greatest of all time in American history.

“Our government will reflect the diversity of the United States, and Indian American voices will be included in shaping the policies that impact their communities. From fighting COVID-19 to building our economy back better to reforming our system of immigration, a Biden-Harris Administration will be one that Indian-Americans can count on,” it said.

“In 2006, Biden announced his vision for the future of US-India relations: ‘My dream is that in 2020, the two closest nations in the world will be India and the United States’,” it said.

The Obama-Biden campaign emerged as the administration which has deepened collaboration between India and the United States on economic, regional, strategic, defense, and many other global challenges as well.

Brad Pitt slams Angelina Jolie for attempting to remove private judge from their divorce battle

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce battle that has been into existence since 2016 seems to be getting uglier now with both parties lashing out at each other. In the latest, Pitt’s attorney has slammed Angelina Jolie after she filed a request to remove the judge from their almost four-year-long battle.

Like most of the celebrities, Pitt and Jolie had hired a private judge for their divorce case to keep many of its details sealed within them, though some legal exceptions must be made within standard court procedure.

Earlier this month, Jolie filed a request to have Judge John W. Ouderkirk taken off from her and Pitt’s divoce case, saying Ouderkirk “failed to make timely mandatory disclosures of ongoing business and professional relationships between himself.” According to a report by People magazine, Jolie has claimed that the judge didn’t inform her of other divorce cases that he was working on along with Pitt’s lawyers which made him “biased”.

Pitt’s attorneys, on the other hand, slammed his ex-wife for attempting to remove Ouderkirk, accusing Jolie of “transparently tactical gambit” to delay proceedings. They also said ultimately it will hurt their childern the most. They also claimed that Jolie was aware about Ouderkirk’s involvement in other high profilce case and “never objected” until now.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Pitt’s team has sought to intervene ahead of Judge Ouderkirk’s response. One can only conclude that this is an attempt to obstruct or influence Judge Ouderkirk’s answer. Any delay in these proceedings is due to their zealous attempt to create an unrecognized special exception for their client’s benefit,” Jolie’s lawyer, Samantha Bley DeJean, responded.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got married on August 23, 2014 after eight years of dating. The former couple share six children together: Maddox, 19; Pax, 16; Zahara, 15; Shiloh, 14; Knox, 12; and Vivienne, 12.

Russia produces first batch of its coronavirus vaccine; health workers to be injected first

The Russian Health ministry on Saturday announced that the country has already produced the first batch of Covid-19 vaccine, dubbed Sputnik V. This step has received a worldwide criticism from scientists and health fraternity. The first batch will be rolled out by the end of this month.

One of the curious things about this development is the agile approach in development of vaccine. As five days earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced that is safe to use and already been administered to his daughter.

Russia is accused by several world leaders and health authorities for hasty development cycle of vaccine without conducting the proper test of human trials for safety and efficiency.

“We’re currently in conversation with Russia to get additional information to understand the status of that product, the trials that have been undertaken and then what the next steps might be,” said Dr. Bruce Aylward, a senior adviser to WHO’s director-general.

A few countries, including Vietnam, Israel and Serbia, have stated that they may negotiate with Russia to acquire the vaccine if it is approved by scientists.
Likewise, several others have expressed their doubts about the safety including Germany, the United States.

In the midst of the chaos and pandemic Russia, sees this as an opportunity to establish its presence as a global power capable of competing with US and China. It is also a matter of national prestige, if they are able to deliver a vaccine first the entire world will be looking up to them.

Russia has already received requests for over on one billion doses of its Covid-19 vaccine from as many as 20 countries, according to the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev. According to him, several Latin American, Middle Eastern and Asian states have expressed an interest in purchasing the vaccine, TASS reported.

Japan commemorated the 75th anniversary of its surrender in World War II on Saturday with a somber ceremony at Tokyo. The Emperor, Empress Masako, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were among a limited number of people who attended the ceremony that was thinned down in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

About 540 participants paid tribute to the war dead and prayed for the peace at the annual government-sponsored event help in Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo. As the clock struck noon, the attendees fell silent for a minute to remember the estimated 3 million Japanese who perished in the conflict.

With less than a tenth of the total from last year attended the ceremony, seating was arranged to maintain social distancing. Attendants were required to wear masks and singing was prohibited during the national anthem. All these steps were followed sincerely to reduce the risk of infections from the novel corona virus.

On August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito declared Japan’s surrender in a radio broadcast.

Both Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe referenced the pandemic in their speeches, while also mentioning previous remarks regarding the war.

“We are currently facing further hardship due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, but I sincerely hope that we are all working together to overcome this difficult situation and will continue to pursue happiness and peace,” Naruhito said. “Together, with all of our people, I would like to pay a heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives during the war… and pray for world peace and for the continuing development of our country.” His remarks of “deep remorse” were same as of last year.

Abe, on the other hand, refrained himself for apologizing for the antagonism and instead pledged never to repeat the history. He also promised to lead from front in country’s fight against novel coronavirus.

The Prime Minister also promised the expansion of Japan’s military capabilities amid growing rift with China and North Korea.

All of this will be accessible through an app or a website with the health records “ownership” lying with the individual, ThePrint.

Explaining the project, he says: Coronavirus has made us think about being self-reliant with regard to health as well.

Amid ongoing tensions with China, US signs deal to sell F-16 jets to Taiwan

Taiwan finalized the purchase of F-16 fighter jets from US aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin on Friday, a source confirmed to AFP, in a $62 billion, 10-year deal sure to anger Beijing.

Taiwan’s purchase of the F-16s marks the first sale of advanced fighter jets to the island since President George H.W. Bush announced approval for 150 F-16s in 1992. A $62 billion figure announced by the Pentagon on Friday is the upper limit of numerous contracts if all potential foreign customers placed their maximum desired number over the decade.

Last year, China’s Foreign Ministry urged Washington not to sell fighter jets to Taiwan and also stop arms sales and military contract with Taiwan. Beijing also threatened Washington of possible retaliation.

The move comes at a time of increasing tensions not only between the U.S. and China, but also between the Asian nation and the Bethesda defense giant.

Chinese officials said last month that they would impose sanctions on Lockheed in retaliation for a recent $620 million deal to sell Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missile parts to Taiwan that will extend the operational lifespan of the country’s arsenal by 30 years.
