Farmers reject govt proposal of amendment in farm laws

Protesting farmers have unanimously rejected the Centre’s written offer of amendments in farm laws, and announced a series of plans to escalate their protest.

The plans involve closure of the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, boycott of Reliance malls and capture of toll plazas.

As farmers agitation against the Centre’s three contentious farm laws entered day 14, the Centre proposed to give a “written assurance” that the existing Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime for procurement will continue.

In a draft proposal sent to 13 agitating farmer unions, the government said it is willing to make necessary amendments on at least seven issues, including one to allay fears about the weakening of the mandi system.

The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) released a statement on government’s proposal on Wednesday and termed them “old proposals dressed up as new”.

“Modi govt insincere & arrogant about resolving farmers demands; all farmers bodies rightly reject old proposals dressed up as new. District level dharnas to start in all states [sic], ” the release stated.

Amid tensions with China, Canberra passes law to scrap agreements with foreign nations

Australia’s parliament on Tuesday voted to grant Canberra new powers to tear up agreements signed with foreign countries. China had earlier warned that the legislation was among a raft of grievances responsible for “poisoning” bilateral ties.

Responding to such warnings from China, Greg Moriarty, the head of Australia’s defence department, also warned that a number of countries in the Indo-Pacific were deeply anxious about the future prospects for peace and stability when increasing competition between China and the United States was causing friction.

Under the new law, Australia’s foreign minister will be able to scrap agreements between other nations and sub-national bodies such as state and territory governments, local councils and universities where he or she believes that they undermine foreign policy, reported South China Morning Post.

Following the vote for new law foreign Minister Marise Payne said the legislation would ensure agreements were consistent with Australia’s foreign policy in an “increasingly globalised world”.

The list was released last month by Chinese Embassy in Canberra which also takes account of Canberra’s 2018 ban on Huawei’s involvement in 5G. List also sights the adverse media report in Australia on Huawei.

Nathan Attrill, who is a researcher at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, which is part-funded by the Australian, US and British governments, said, ‘It certainly is not going to help alleviate the current [fight] between the two governments but as Beijing has the right to decide the scope of China’s engagement with foreign countries, so does Canberra’.

Trump signs executive order prioritising COVID-19 vaccine for Americans

American President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that is  prioritising Americans’ access to Covid-19 vaccines before the US potentially begins helping other nations.

“To ensure the health and safety of our citizens, to strengthen our economy, and to enhance the security of our Nation, we must ensure that Americans have priority access to COVID-19 vaccines developed in the United States or procured by the United States Government,” the order read.

If necessary, Trump said, he is ready to invoke the Defence Production Act to ensure that Covid-19 vaccines first get to the Americans. The Defence Production Act allows a president to force private manufacturers to ramp up production and give the federal government priority on any orders it places.

American companies, he said, were the first to produce a verifiably safe and effective vaccine.

“Together, we will defeat the virus, and we will soon end the pandemic, and we will save millions and millions of lives, both in our country and all over the world. And we’ve already started,” Trump said during signing the executive order on Tuesday at a White House event celebrating ‘Operation Warp Speed’, his administration’s effort to produce and distribute safe and effective vaccines for COVID-19.
