Veteran actor Bharat Kapoor, known for memorable roles in Barsaat, Noorie and Bazaar, passed away in Mumbai on April 27, 2026. He was 80. Reports state that the actor died after suffering a cardiac arrest followed by multiple organ failure, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly four decades.

Bharat Kapoor was one of those dependable faces of Hindi cinema who left a mark without always being in the spotlight. With a commanding screen presence and sharp dialogue delivery, he became a familiar figure in films through the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Fans especially remember him for playing RK Mehra in Barsaat (1995).

Bharat Kapoor Built A Strong Career In Hindi Cinema

Bharat Kapoor began acting in 1972 and went on to appear in more than 150 films and around 40 television shows. He was often cast in villainous or powerful supporting roles and became known for adding intensity to every scene.

Some of his best-known films include:

  • Noorie
  • Bazaar
  • Aakhree Raasta
  • Khuda Gawah
  • Love Story
  • Ghulami
  • Sone Pe Suhaaga

He also explored direction and helmed films like Raeeszada and Barsaat Ki Raat. Colleagues admired his professionalism and strong memory. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit once praised his ability to remember long dialogues with ease.

Major Drama On Barsaat Film Set

One of Bharat Kapoor’s most talked-about films, Barsaat, also saw serious behind-the-scenes turmoil. Reports claim director Shekhar Kapur was removed from the project after shooting for 27 days.

The reported reason was his wish to step away mid-way to work on Bandit Queen. Dharmendra then fired him and replaced him with Rajkumar Santoshi, who took charge of the film. The sudden shift created major drama during production, though the movie later became a known title in Kapoor’s career.

Bharat Kapoor Battled Alcoholism After Personal Loss

Behind the screen success, Bharat Kapoor also faced painful struggles in personal life. After the death of his wife in 1984, he reportedly went through a difficult emotional phase.

Reports suggest he battled severe alcoholism during that period and withdrew from acting for some time. Despite the setbacks, he later returned to work and continued appearing in projects, including Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities.

Final Goodbye In Mumbai

Bharat Kapoor had reportedly been unwell for three days before his death. He passed away at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital around 3 PM. His last rites were held privately in the city and attended by close family, friends and industry colleagues.

Though he was never projected as a conventional lead hero, Bharat Kapoor earned lasting respect through talent, discipline and unforgettable performances.

Punjab fully prepared to meet record summer power demand, ensure uninterrupted supply: Sanjeev Arora

Sanjeev Arora

Facing a sharp and sudden surge in electricity demand driven by an intense heatwave, the Bhagwant Mann Government has moved swiftly to ensure uninterrupted power supply across Punjab, with Power Minister Sanjeev Arora asserting that Punjab remains firmly in control even as demand skyrocketed from 7,900 MW to over 12,000 MW within just ten days.

Backed by a ₹6,000+ crore infrastructure overhaul under Mission Roshan Punjab and a nearly 70% reduction in unplanned outages, the state’s power utility Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) has managed to maintain grid stability at a time when several parts of the country are grappling with shortages, positioning Punjab among the better-prepared states to handle peak summer demand.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Punjab Power Minister Sanjeev Arora asserted that the Bhagwant Mann Government has made comprehensive preparations to tackle the sharp surge in electricity demand amid the ongoing heatwave, ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the state under the leadership of Bhagwant Singh Mann. “PSPCL is fully prepared to meet the unexpected rise in power demand during the current summer season and ensure smooth and uninterrupted power supply across the state,” he said.

The Power Minister highlighted the recent surge in demand, stating, “Due to the ongoing heatwave, Punjab has witnessed a sharp jump in electricity demand over the last few days. The State’s maximum power demand surged from around 7,900 MW on 15th April to over 12,000 MW by 25th April, registering nearly 12% increase over last year.”.

Emphasising Punjab’s preparedness, he added, “Despite this sudden rise, PSPCL has successfully managed the demand and maintained grid stability through timely planning, robust infrastructure, and advance power arrangements.”

Minister Sanjeev Arora further pointed out the national scenario, saying, “At the national level also, power demand has touched record highs, with India recording an all-time peak demand of 252 GW on 24th April, while available supply stood at around 239 GW, creating a 13 GW deficit across the country. Several states are facing shortages and outages, but Punjab has remained comparatively better positioned due to proactive planning.”

Referring to the directions of the Chief Minister, he said, “CM Sardar Bhagwant Singh Mann has specifically instructed the Power Minister and the entire PSPCL team to ensure that the public does not face inconvenience due to any power outages, and all departments are working in mission mode to fulfill these directions.”

Detailing the steps taken, Sanjeev Arora said, “Negotiations for 1,500 to 2,000 MW additional power through banking arrangements with other states are in advanced stages.”

He added, “State hydel plants damaged in 2025 floods are being restored, with 300 MW additional capacity expected shortly.”

“Additional procurement from other states and private sources is securing nearly 1,500 MW extra power,” he stated.

“Punjab is preparing to draw 2,000 MW from the Central Government power pool,” he further said.

“Competitive short-term tenders have been floated to procure all available surplus power,” he added.

He also informed, “Waiver of wheeling charges and cross subsidy from 6 PM to 6 AM for two months to encourage more power availability.”

Highlighting infrastructure strengthening, Sanjeev Arora said, “Under Mission Roshan Punjab, a historic ₹6,000+ crore investment is underway to modernize and strengthen the power infrastructure across the state.”

He elaborated, “Major works completed / underway include: 70 new substations being set up, upgradation of 200 existing substations, installation / augmentation of 8,000 distribution transformers (DTs), 688 feeders already de-loaded to reduce overloading-related faults, around 41,000 new DTs installed and 8,380 DTs augmented, 7 new 66 KV substations commissioned, and 82 power transformers fully completed.”

On system reliability, he said, “PSPCL has also significantly reduced unplanned outages compared to last year. By April Week-3, unplanned outages dropped by nearly 70%, from 13,271 in 2025 to 3,974 in 2026, reflecting the impact of ongoing infrastructure strengthening.”

Sanjeev Arora added, “PSPCL teams are working round the clock to ensure reliable power supply to domestic, agricultural, industrial, and commercial consumers during the peak summer season.”

Reassuring the public, he concluded, “The people of Punjab are assured that PSPCL is fully geared up to meet the challenge of rising demand and provide quality power supply across the state.”

During the press conference, Shri Basant Garg IAS, Chairman PSPCL, Shri Inderpal Singh, Director Distribution, and Shri Shoikat Roy, Member PDC, were also present.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s decision is rooted in truth, self-respect & Gandhian satyagraha, AAP Punjab leadership stands firmly with him

CM Mann

Senior leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has strongly backed the decision of AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal to refrain from appearing before the court of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, calling it a principled step rooted in truth, self-respect, and the Gandhian philosophy of Satyagraha.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann took to ‘X’ and wrote, “Arvind Kejriwal has demonstrated that one must be ready to sacrifice anything for justice and self-respect. When questions arise over the judiciary’s impartiality, public trust is shaken. We all stand firmly with him.”

Meanwhile, AAP Punjab President Aman Arora stated, “When political shadows fall over justice, both truth and fairness suffer. In cases involving the BJP and its ideological ecosystem, doubts over impartiality naturally arise.”

Referring to Arvind Kejriwal’s decision, Aman Arora said, “His decision to adopt the path of satyagraha reflects a peaceful yet powerful resistance inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. The judiciary must take note of the concerns being raised to restore public confidence.”

On the other hand, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “This move is unprecedented. It may be the first time since independence that a leader has chosen such a path to expose systemic concerns. Arvind Kejriwal’s decision is a principled stand aimed at safeguarding faith in justice and ensuring that the process remains transparent and unbiased.”

Power Minister Sanjeev Arora stated, “The credibility of the justice system depends not only on fairness but also on transparency in that fairness. When public questions arise regarding the impartiality of proceedings, it becomes necessary to take a stand that protects the sanctity of the system.”

Meanwhile, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said, “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. This is the foundation of the legal system. When even this basic standard is in doubt, stepping back is not weakness, it is the voice of conscience.” Harjot Singh Bains also saluted Arvind Kejriwal’s stand.

Cabinet Ministers Dr. Balbir Singh, Lal Chand Kataruchak, Hardeep Singh Mundian, and Harbhajan Singh ETO also echoed similar sentiments, expressing solidarity with Kejriwal and reaffirming their commitment to the fight for truth and justice.

AAP Punjab leaders collectively stated that this decision is not against the judiciary but is a call to uphold its highest standards. They reiterated their full support to Arvind Kejriwal and emphasized that the party will continue to stand for transparency, fairness, and the rule of law.

People’s Govt clears purchase of amphibious machines to strengthen flood preparedness ahead of monsoon: CM Bhagwant Singh Mann

CM Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday reviewed the state’s flood preparedness and approved the purchase of advanced amphibious machines to strengthen Punjab’s flood prevention and relief infrastructure, asserting that the People’s Government is moving proactively to minimise damage and protect lives ahead of the monsoon season.

Chairing a high-level meeting, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “In order to carry out flood relief measures further in a smooth and hassle free manner, consent has been given to purchase amphibious machines for desilting of rivers and drains effectively.”

He emphasised that these machines are capable of operating even in running water and can carry out deep desilting, making them critical for both preventive action and emergency response. “These multipurpose machines can carry on desilting deeply due to which acquiring them is the need of the hour to carry flood relief operations both in anticipation and in case of emergency,” he stated, while directing the department to prepare a detailed blueprint for their procurement.

Referring to global best practices, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “I had seen the operations of this machine recently during my trip to Finland where these multipurpose machines are optimally utilized.” He added that these machines can be effectively deployed for maintenance and cleaning of rivers, drains, ponds and other water bodies, alongside flood protection works. “The acquisition of these machines by the state government will go a long way in mitigating the woes faced by people due to fury of floods,” he noted.

Highlighting water management concerns, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “The maximum water level of the Bhakra Dam was 1680 feet and on April 26 this was recorded as 1594 feet.”

He stressed that with paddy sowing set to begin from June 1, water release must be planned carefully in view of the approaching monsoon. “Since the state is all set to start the sowing of paddy crops from June 1, so maximum water should be released from the Bhakra Dam keeping in view the monsoon season ahead,” he said, adding, “By May 31 the ongoing work on new and revival of watercourses in the state will be completed after which 5000 cusec more water will be required for irrigation purposes.”

Reviewing ongoing works, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann expressed satisfaction over the efforts of the Water Resources department. “The works being carried out across the state to avert floods are in larger public interest,” he said, adding that drain cleaning is progressing at full pace and will be completed soon. He further noted that desilting at major flood-prone sites has already been carried out effectively to prevent potential flooding.

Focusing on vulnerable regions, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “In the Ropar district where around 20 villages are flood prone and had faced huge losses last year, the state government has taken a number of preventive actions.” He highlighted that stud and spur structures are being constructed as required to control flooding and provide relief to residents. He also directed officials to explore the feasibility of channelisation of the Swaan river for both irrigation and tourism purposes.

On the occasion, Cabinet Ministers Harjot Singh Bains and Barinder Kumar Goel, Lok Sabha MP Malwinder Singh Kang, Chief Secretary KAP Sinha and other senior officials were also present.

Middle East Crisis: Bad News for Sweet Tooth! Chocolate & Ice Cream Raw Costs Explode, Could Your Tastebuds Be Any Happier Now?

Middle East Crisis

Middle East Crisis: The world today is no stranger to disruption but the latest tremors from the Middle East crisis are likely to hit consumers in their dessert bowls. Yes, you read that absolutely right! The prices of nuts and dry fruits have increased by approximately 15-22 percent over pre-war levels while rising packaging and logistics rates are adding to cost pressures.

Middle East Crisis-What’s Causing An Increase In Chocolate & Ice Cream Raw Costs?

Cocoa and dairy are primarily products of West Africa, Europe, the United States and New Zealand. However, today’s food system is deeply interconnected and energy markets sits at the core.

The Middle East remains one of the world’s most critical oil-producing regions and any instability could push crude oil prices upward. A surge in oil prices could easily translate to increased packaging, production and transportation costs across industries, including food.

What Has Changed In Terms Of Raw Cost Pricing?

Cocoa prices were already high because of poor harvests sin Ivory Coast and Ghana where yields have been reducing due to erratic weather conditions. Now, with higher fuel costs inflating shipping expenses, the price of moving cocoa beans from farms to processing facilities and ultimately to global markets has climbed further. Add to this the rising cost of sugar, another energy-intensive commodity, and the economics of chocolate production become increasingly strained.

A similar squeeze is noticed by ice cream producers. The dairy farming sector is highly energy-dependent, from powering milking machines to refrigerating milk and transporting it quickly to processing plants. When fuel prices rise, there is also an increase in the cost of producing and distributing milk, cream and butterfat that are the essential building blocks of ice cream. Even stabilizers, flavourings and packaging materials are affected, as petrochemicals play a significant role in their production.

The result – Premium ice cream brands, meanwhile, are quietly raising prices or offering fewer promotional discounts. Artisanal dessert shops, which often operate on thinner margins, are finding it particularly difficult to absorb these cost increases.

restless leg syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome: Also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is believed to affect 5-10 percent of the world population to varying degrees. For some, the health complication is an occasional night-time nuisance; for others, it becomes a chronic condition that disrupts sleep, impacts mental health and reduces quality of life. Despite its prevalence, RLS often goes undiagnosed because its early warning signs are subtle and frequently dismissed as simple restlessness, stress or fatigue.

Warning Signs Of Restless Leg Syndrome

A persistent urge to move the legs, especially during period of rest or at night, is a classic warning sign of Restless Leg Syndrome. Many individuals describe it as a creeping, crawling, tingling, or pulling sensation deep within the legs.

  • Persistent urge to move the legs
  • Unpleasant sensations (tingling, crawling, itching, pulling)
  • Symptoms worsen during rest or inactivity
  • Partial or temporary relief with movement (walking, stretching)
  • Increased severity during evening or night-time
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Daytime fatigue, irritability, or reduced concentration

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

It can be described as a neurological sensory-motor disorder that is generally characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, typically accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. These symptoms tend to worsen in the evening or at night, making sleep particularly difficult.

Who is at Increased Risk?

Certain individuals are more susceptible to developing Restless Leg Syndrome:

  • Women, particularly during pregnancy
  • Individuals with iron deficiency or anaemia
  • People with chronic kidney disease
  • Those with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy
  • People with a family history of RLS
  • Individuals experiencing chronic stress or poor sleep hygiene
  • Those with gut health issues, including poor nutrient absorption

How To Manage Restless Leg Syndrome?

  • Focus on iron (leafy greens, lentils, lean meats), magnesium (nuts, seeds, whole grains) and Vitamin B12 as well as folate.
  • Include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and fermented vegetables, increase fibre intake to support microbiome balance and avoid ultra-processed foods that promote inflammation.
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, avoid screens at least one hour before bedtime and create a cool, dark and quiet sleep environment.

Eggs: Could High Thermic Effect Of This Superfood Harm You In Summers? Top Gastroenterologist Shares Observations

Eggs

Eggs: There is no denying the fact that eggs have rightly earned their place as one of the most affordable, versatile and nutrient-dense superfoods in modern diets. The best thing is that eggs are packed with essential vitamins (B12 and D), high-quality protein and key nutrients like choline. However, as temperatures rise, a common concern resurfaces – whether eggs can increase “body heat,” especially due to their high thermic effect during summer months.

In a recently shared video by Dr. Shubham Vatsya, the country’s top Gastroenterologist, you can explore if eggs can be harmful to your health during summer months.

Key Benefits Of Eggs

  • High-quality complete protein source
  • Rich in essential amino acids
  • Excellent source of vitamin B12
  • Contains vitamin D for bone health
  • Supports brain function (choline)
  • Promotes satiety and weight management
  • Supports muscle repair and growth
  • Contains antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin
  • Beneficial for eye health
  • Affordable and easily accessible nutrition

High Thermic Effect of Eggs: Is It Harmful in Summers?

Eggs are rich in protein that has the highest thermic effect among all macronutrients. In other words, your body utilizes more energy and produces slightly more heat while digesting eggs as compared to fat or carbohydrates. However, this increase in terms of heat production is temporary, mild and part of a normal metabolic process.

From a gastroenterology perspective, this thermic effect is not harmful, even in hot weather. It does not raise your core body temperature in any clinically meaningful way. The human body is highly efficient at regulating temperature through sweating and circulation.

Ideal Quantity, Best Time And Practical Tips

For most healthy adults, the consumption of 1–2 eggs per day is considered safe and beneficial. Individuals with higher protein needs (such as athletes) may consume more, but this should be balanced with overall diet and medical history. The ideal time to consume eggs in morning as eggs offer sustained energy, better satiety and metabolic support.
