Illness in many homes arrives not just with pain, but with panic. A hospital admission often means hurried borrowing, mortgaging jewellery, or watching savings vanish in a matter of days. Families many a time delay treatment, hoping things would improve on their own, simply because the cost of care feels heavier than the illness itself.

A 2021 study in Applied Health Economics and Health Policy laid bare what many already knew in their bones: medical costs in India fall heavily on households, often pushing them into severe financial distress. Using national survey data, it showed how diseases like cancer and heart conditions routinely led to catastrophic spending, especially in private hospitals. In many cases, treatment came at the cost of long-term poverty. It was a stark reminder that illness was not only a medical issue, but an economic one too.

Today, however, a different story is beginning to unfold across Punjab. The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has emerged as a quiet but powerful shift in the way families experience healthcare. For the first time, many are finding that treatment does not have to mean financial collapse. 

In Punjab, where hospital bills once pushed families into debt and despair, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana is quietly reshaping lives. Offering cashless treatment of up to ₹10 lakh, the scheme has already supported over 1.59 lakh beneficiaries and is being seen as a lifeline for ordinary households who once feared falling ill more than anything else.

Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh said, “From complex surgeries and heart procedures to dialysis, neonatal care, and critical illness treatments, the aim is that no one should be denied care because they cannot afford it. The Bhagwant Mann Government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana offers cashless health coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family annually to all bona fide residents of Punjab, including middle-class families, government employees, and pensioners.”

The scheme follows the updated HBP 2.2 framework and includes nearly 2,300 health benefit packages across 839 hospitals, covering both government and empanelled private healthcare facilities. Additionally, 98 specialised treatment packages have been reserved exclusively for government hospitals.

The scale of impact is already visible. As of 16 May, over 1.59 lakh beneficiaries had received treatment under the scheme, with more than 3.11 lakh procedures carried out. The total support provided has crossed ₹522 crore. Behind each figure is a story; of a farmer who did not have to sell land for surgery, of a child whose treatment began without delay, of a family spared the cycle of debt that once followed every major illness.

Awareness too, is spreading steadily, from the busy lanes of Ludhiana to the quieter villages of Tarn Taran. Over 44 lakh health cards have been issued, signalling growing trust in the system. Districts such as Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar are seeing particularly strong enrolment, as families line up not out of fear, but preparation.

What makes the scheme especially practical is its simplicity. Registration is available at Common Service Centres, government hospitals, district offices, and outreach camps. Basic identification like Aadhaar and Voter card are enough to get started. It also covers not just hospitalisation, but pre-treatment tests and post-care recovery, plugging the hidden financial leaks that often follow illness.

The ‘Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026,’ introduced by the Bhagwant Mann government with the objective of preventing the sacrilege incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and ensuring strict punishment for the guilty, is receiving overwhelming support from the public and political circles.

Because of this law’s implementation, several prominent leaders and workers of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress party left their respective traditional parties and joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday. All the leaders were formally inducted into the party by the Chief Minister’s OSD Rajbir Singh Ghuman.

The leaders who joined the party said that previous governments merely politicized the sensitive issue of sacrilege and worked to protect the guilty. But by bringing and implementing this law, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government has proven its deep reverence for Guru Sahib. With the introduction of this strict law, anti-social elements attempting to commit sacrilege will be deterred, and Punjab’s religious harmony and peace will be maintained.

OSD Ghuman assured all the leaders and workers who joined the party that they would receive full respect and recognition in the Aam Aadmi Party.

After decades of waiting, canal water has finally reached the fields of Punjab’s Kandi belt. Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Scheme is transforming a region long marked by water scarcity and agricultural uncertainty. Linked to the Bist Doab Canal, the project is delivering assured irrigation to areas that had remained beyond reach for over three decades.

For generations, farmers in this semi-hilly terrain relied on erratic rainfall and rapidly depleting ground water. Rocky soil and uneven topography made tubewell irrigation largely unviable, leaving vast stretches vulnerable to drought and crop failure. Today, that uncertainty is giving way to stability, as canal water begins to flow regularly into fields across Balachaur for the first time in decades.

Located on the right bank of the canal in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the project is more than infrastructure, it is a lifeline for the region. The scheme will provide assured irrigation to 38 villages, covering nearly 11,500 acres of previously water-stressed land.

Engineered to overcome challenging terrain, the project lifts water up to 300 feet and will distribute it through a 221-kilometre closed pipeline network, which will further ensure minimal transmission losses and efficient delivery. Areas once considered beyond the scope of irrigation will now be brought under cultivation.

Sustainability remains central to the initiative. A 1,300-kilowatt solar power system will significantly reduce operational costs while supporting long-term energy efficiency, reflecting a forward-looking approach to water management.

The scale of impact is substantial. Irrigation coverage is set to expand from 28,205 acres across 72 villages to over 39,705 acres spanning 110 villages in the Kandi Belt of Balachaur area. For regions long classified as ‘dark zones’ due to critically low groundwater levels, this marks a decisive turning point.

For farmers, the transformation is deeply personal. “Earlier, we lived at the mercy of rain. A dry season meant certain loss,” said a local farmer. “Now, water has reached our fields and with it, a sense of security we never had before.”

More than a development project, the Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Scheme represents a new chapter for Punjab’s Kandi belt restoring confidence, strengthening livelihoods, and turning decades of hardship into a future defined by resilience and growth.
