Eid Al Adha is celebrated across the country and with regulations due to Covid-19

The ‘Festival of the sacrifice,’ Eid al-Adha is called Id-ul-Adha in Arabic and Bakr-Id in the Indian subcontinent, because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat or ‘Bakri’ in Urdu. It is the second of the two Eids celebrated by Muslims with traditional fervour and gaiety in India and across the world.

Guidelines stipulate that the sale and purchase of animals for Bakri Eid has to be conducted online to prevent crowding at animal markets in light of Covid-19.

However, with no specific system in place to facilitate large-scale online trade, conveyance and delivery of goats that are predominantly sourced from other states, the guidelines have triggered confusion and indignation among animal traders and consumers in the state.

According to Times Of India: Mohammad Alam, the owner of Babu Hotel, a small eatery on Urdu Bazar Road, had managed such a deal. But he bought only two goats instead of the six or seven he usually brought home to be sacrificed on Eid ul Adha every year. “The situation is dire and not many anyway can afford to spend big sums this year,” the 38-year-old explained. “The fear of the coronavirus has prompted many to eschew Eid celebrations”.

This year with the novel coronavirus forcing us to maintain social distancing and not partake in any gathering, it is pertinent that we share our greetings online. One of the best and most interactive ways to do that is using WhatsApp stickers. There are several specialised stickers available for Bakri-Id, from which one can choose from. You can also curate your own personalised Eid-ul-Adha 2020 stickers.

Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and other Bollywood actors extended Eid greetings on social media.

Priyanka Chopra wrote, “#EidMubarak to everyone celebrating all over the world. Hope it brings us blessings, happiness & peace.”

Anil Kapoor wrote, “On this blessed occasion of Eid, wishing you and your family joy, happiness, peace and prosperity! #EidMubarak!”

Defence ministry writes to CBFC; says advise production houses to seek NOC on Army theme content

The Defence Ministry had obtained some complaints putting forward strong criticisms about the portrayal of Indian Army personnel and the military uniform in an ‘insulting manner’ as per sources.

Taking sharp criticism to the portrayal of armed forces personnel in some web series, the Defence Ministry has written to the Central Board of Film Certification, urging that production houses may be advised to obtain a no-objection certificate from the ministry before telecasting any film, documentary or web series on an Army theme, sources said.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory film-certification body in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. It is tasked with “regulating the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952.” Films screened in cinemas and on television may only be publicly exhibited in India after certification by the board.

A letter intimating of the decision was addressed to the Regional Officer, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and was released on July 27, 2020.

The letter, has been triggered by producer Ekta Kapoor’s show on video-streaming platform ALT Balaji that allegedly depicted the Indian Army in a “distorted manner”.

XXX is a 2018 Hindi erotic comedy-drama web series directed by Ken Ghosh for the video on demand platform ALTBalaji. It features Kyra Dutt, Aparnaa Bajpai, Rithvik Dhanjani, Shantanu Maheshwari, Ankit Gera, Pryanca Talukdar and Aparna Sharma in the lead roles.

In June, Bigg Boss 13 contestant Hindustani Bhau had filed a police complaint against Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor for “disrespecting” the Army in their show.

The letter mention particularly that  ‘XXX Uncensored (season-2)’ web series depicted Indian Army Personnel and Military Uniform in distorted manner. FIR against ALT Balaji was also launched seeking legal action against the producer and the OTT platform.

Army won’t take eyes off Ladakh, all set to shop for Siachen

Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) dragging its feet on restoring the status ante along the 1,597km Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Ladakh sector. Now the Indian Army has started preparing for a long winter as they do not want a repeat of April 2020.

Government officials had confirmed that ”the Indian Army has asked its defence attaches posted in embassies in the US, Russia and Europe to identify warm clothes and snow tent manufacturers in case there is a need for emergency purchases”.

After the Operation Meghdoot in Siachen in 1984, the Indian Army got all its necessity fulfilled by local manufacturers for igloos, semi-hemispherical domes, Down parkas, snow goggles, boots and gloves for troops guarding the heights in the western sector.

“In order to cater for winter clothing requirements, we have not only placed orders with domestic manufacturers but also asked troops other than those stationed on Saltoro ridge and Siachen glacier to give up extreme snow clothing. For instance, even troops at Partapur and Thoise are allowed Siachen clothing but the height of the two bases is same as Leh. So in the worst case scenario we will ask Partapur and Thoise troops to give up their down jackets, trousers, gloves, boots and goggles to their fellow jawans being posted up on the occupied Aksai Chin front,” said a second Army commander.

“The Chinese aggression came despite all talks of peace and tranquility. It is very important on part of both sides to settle the border issue soon as the number of friction points are increasing on the LAC and even a small spark can cause a flare-up, as unlike in the past, the Indian Army is regularly mounting patrols to earmark Indian territory and defend it to the last inch,” said a former Army chief.

UGC told Students to continue their preparation for examinations

On Friday the University Grants Commission (UGC) told Students should continue with their preparation for the final-year university examinations scheduled to be held by the end of September 30 and should not harbour any misconception that the Supreme Court will stay them.

UGC was earlier defending its July 6 directive asking universities across the country to hold final-year or final-semester examinations by the end of September.

“My request is that nobody should remain under the impression the final exams will be stayed because the Supreme Court is hearing the case. Students should continue to prepare for the exams,” solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for UGC, said.

The SC was hearing a batch of PLEA by several students and organisations challenging the guidelines issued by UGC on July 6 to hold final-year examinations by September 30.

The bench asked Maharashtra and Delhi to submit their response to the same. The bench was headed by justice Ashok Bhushan. Now the case will be taken up for hearing next on August 10.

“All universities/institutions in the country are obligated to conduct terminal semester/ final year examination by the end of September 2020. The UGC took the decision to protect the academic future of students across the country while also keeping in mind their health and safety,” the UGC affidavit stated.

Donald Trump plans to ban TikTok in the United States over privacy concerns

The U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said that he will ban popular video sharing app TikTok citing concerns raised by American authorities over privacy. Reportedly, the authorities have expressed concerns that the social media app could be a tool for Chinese intelligence.

The move would come after US officials and lawmakers voiced fears of the wildly popular video platform being used by Beijing for iniquitous purposes, however, ByteDance, the company who owns TikTok, has denied the allegations.

Media reports were making rounds earlier on Friday that the President would require permission from the Chinese firm ByteDance to bar the app, but Trump announced the ban without any divest.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said: “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States.” He also added that the he will announce something as soon as Saturday. The president also refuted the rumours that the government has signed a spin off deal involving Microsoft buying TikTok.

As per a report published in News18, the United States have an estimated 80 million monthly active TikTpk users.

“These are the facts: 100 million Americans come to TikTok for entertainment and connection, especially during the pandemic. We’ve hired nearly 1,000 people to our U.S. team this year alone, and are proud to be hiring another 10,000 employees into great paying jobs across the US. Our $1 billion creator fund supports U.S. creators who are building livelihoods from our platform. TikTok U.S. user data is stored in the U.S., with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the U.S. We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform,” a TikTok spokesperson told ABC News.

TikTok, wildly popular among millennial and gen-z generations, who create and watch its short-form videos, has an estimated billion users worldwide. However, time and again, the app is accused of users’ privacy breach.

Earlier in July, the Indian government announced ban on the use of 59 mobile apps including TikTok because they were “engaged in activities … prejudicial to [the] sovereignty and integrity of India.”

Hong Kong delays polls by a year due to covid pandemic

Hog Kong leader Carrie Lam has announced that the Sepetember 6 election for the city’s legislature would be postponed for a year, sayihng it it necessary amid the surge in covid-19 cases. The opposition has accused the government of using pandemic as an opportunity to stop people from voting.

Opposition was in the favour of elections as they hoped to obtain lead over the pro-democracy in September’s polls, capitalizing the rage over new security law enforced by China in Hong Kong that has attracted criticism from the likes of the US and UK.

The decision to delay the vote came after the government banned 12 pro-democracy candidates from running in the elections. This has led people to suspect whether the pandemic was the real reason of the postponement.

“Obviously the Chinese Communist Party is using Covid-19 as a cover up to stop Hong Kongers from voting against the governments and democrats’ potential majority win,” Avery Ng, secretary-general of the League of Social Democrats said.

On Friday, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said she would invoke emergency powers to postpone the elections, calling it the “most difficult decision I’ve made over the past seven months.”

“We have 3 million voters going out in one day across Hong Kong, such flow of people would cause high risk of infection,” Lam added. “This postponement is entirely made based on public safety reasons, there were no political considerations,” she said.

On 1 July 1997 sovereignty over the British colony of Hong Kong was formally transferred to China. Pro-democracy candidates had made a major unprecedented win in last year’s district council elections, winning 17 out of 18 councils.

Hong Kong is currently experiencing a spike in covid-19 infections and the city reported 121 fresh cases on Friday.

Now that he was in good form, he has retired,” Shoaib Akthar said last year in an interview.

The U.S. Tennis Association is planning to stage the two tournaments back-to-back in New York

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have entered the US Open tuneup tournament to be played in New York.

The U.S. Tennis Association is planning to stage the two tournaments back-to-back in New York while the coronavirus outbreak worsens in other parts of the country and there are lingering questions about international travel.

The tournament will be played from August 20-28 in a quarantine environment without an audience at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, where the Grand Slam hardcourt showdown would begin August 31 in similar conditions.

In a recent interview, Novak Djokovic stated about conditions under which he will be performing and the various challenges which he may accept.

Dimitrov, played at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) on Saturday and Sunday, faced losses against Richard Gasquet and Feliciano Lopez.

Dimitrov is still suffering from the effects of coronavirus

“I’m just trying to put in effort every single day,” he told Tennis Majors.

“Even if I’m tired or not, to keep progressing. One day I feel really well and I have about four hours to be out, but then all of a sudden I need to completely shut down to take a nap or just rest. I have to go through that process as much as possible. Hopefully, I’m going to recover fully.”

Dimitrov, the world number 19, said he was grateful to be playing again after his initial struggle with coronavirus.

“I guess it [COVID-19] is different for everyone. I was not breathing well. I was tired. I had no taste, no smell,” he said.

IPL governing council could limit the squad strength

Indian Premier League governing council slated to meet on August 2. The reason for this meeting is to decide on the strength of each squad and they are also looking to formalize the standard operating procedure for this year’s tournament.

Normally an IPL franchise has 20-25 players in its squad and more than 15 support staff. This time the franchises will organize their bio-secure protocol after reaching UAE. So, the franchises could be forced to limit the number of travelers. With more people in the bio-secure bubble for almost 2 months, it would be difficult for each of them to maintain the limitations.

Last time when IPL was played in UAE in 2014, teams carried the full-strength squad with no restrictions. Usually, the franchises release several players in the mid-season who aren’t close to the playing XI. On the other hand, the franchises believe that there shouldn’t be any compromise on the number of players in the squad, they could limit the support staffs but not the players.

“If at all there are directions on the squad strength, then the franchises would prefer to prune their non-playing staff. Some franchises will leave this decision to the coach and team management. Ideally, if there is a cap then it should be on the entourage as a whole. On match days, there could be a cap on the number of people a franchise brings to the ground. Even a few from the support staff could be asked to stay back in the hotel,” a senior franchise official told TOI.

SC: Bihar government supports Sushant’s father to oppose transfer of FIR sought by Rhea Chakraborty

After Rhea Chakraborty filed a plea in Supreme Court seeking transfer of FIR lodged against her by Sushant Singh Rajput’s father, KK Singh, from Bihar to Mumbai, the Bihar government has come in the favour of the late actor’s family.

As per a report published in NDTV, the Bihar government has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court backing the late actor’s father in the court against the transfer of the FIR in the case.

According to media reports, former Attorney General, Mukul Rohatgi, will be representing the Bihar government defending its probe into Sushant’s death case. The state government would support Sushant’s father in the apex court and would also oppose the transfer of FIR from Bihar to Mumbai asked by Rhea Chakraborty. Sushant’s father has accused Rhea of money laundering and abeting the actor’s suicide.

As per the FIR filed with the Patna Police, Rhea has been booked under sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 380 (theft in dwelling house), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 306 (abetment of suicide).

A copy of the FIR that has gone viral on the social media read that Rhea along with her family controlled and mentally harassed Sushant. It also said that Rhea confiscated his phone and kept a strict watch on him. It also mentioned that Rhea took advantage of Sushant’s professional career for her personal benefits and even threatened him to damage his image in the public eye.

The FIR filed in Patna is the case lodged after Sushant’s death. Earlier, the Mumbai Police had registered an accidental death report (ADR) on June 14, after the actor’s death.

The rumours of Sushant and Rhea’s alleged relationship were making rounds for half and year, however, both the actors dismissed claims saying they’re just good friends. After Sushant’s death, when Rhea was quizzed by the Mumbai Police, she accepted to be in a live-in relationship with the actor.

Sushant was found dead at his Bandra apartment on July 14. The prima facie of the death was assumed to be suicide as the actor was found hanging in his room and the post mortem report revealed the cause of the death to be asphyxia. However, a major section of the country has refused to call it a suicide, demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

Meanwhile, SC on Thursday dismissed the PIL seeking a CBI probe in connection with Sushant’s death.
