Farmers’ Protest: NIA to summon dozens of protesting farmers

Even as the deadlock over three farm laws continues, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued notices to dozens of Punjabi and Sikh activists taking part in the farmers’ protest in connection with an FIR registered against US-based outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ)—a pro-Khalistani organisation based out of the US.

The number of people who received such notices is expected to be more than 40 and the number of people summoned continues to rise.

In response to NIA summons to several activists associated with the farmers’ protest, union leaders today claimed the move was a government tactic to scuttle their agitation. They said they would move the court.

Baldev Singh Sirsa, president, Lok Bhalai Insaf Welfare Society, said he would not appear before the NIA on Sunday due to a prior engagement. “Having failed to corner the farmers through other means, the government is now trying to intimidate us through the NIA,” he said.

The NIA had filed a First Information Report (FIR) on December 15, 2020 in Delhi against three — Gurpatwant Singh Pannu from the United States, Paramjit Singh Pamma, who is based in the United Kingdom and Hardeep Singh Nijjar of Canada. Pannu heads the SFJ.

The FIR reads: “The central government has received information that Sikhs for Justice an ‘Unlawful Association under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and other Khalistani terrorist outfits, including but not limited to Babbar Khalsa International, Khalistan Tiger Force and Khalistan Zindabad Force along with their frontal organisations have entered into a conspiracy to create an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness and to cause disaffection in people and to incite them towards rising in rebellion against the Government of India.”

The farmers’ leader, who is one of the representatives in the talks over the farm laws with the Centre, said that the government was afraid of the tractor rally scheduled for Republic Day on January 26, according to the Hindustan Times. “However, we will continue our struggle for the repeal of the laws,” he said.

To oppose the NIA’s move, Sirsa led supporters at the site of a protest outside a mall in Amritsar. Several Sikh activists, who had also received the notices, joined them.

Rohit Sharma: Natarajan is the pacer who can sustain in the Indian line-up

Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team, is strongly influenced by T Natarajan’s ‘strong personality’ and believes that the Tamil Nadu left-arm fast bowler will continue to perform well and he the pacer for whom India in a hunt for a long.

Natarajan came with the team as a net bowler. He, along with bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Shardul Thakur, bowled Australia for 369 runs in the first innings and according to Rohit, it was nothing short of an achievement.

“Natarajan is a bright prospect for us, he showed a lot of discipline when he played for India in the white-ball format. He was coming off a good IPL and he carried that confidence into the white-ball series against Australia. Then to have a Test match like that, first spell he bowled was very accurate, if I have to judge,” said Rohit during the virtual press conference on Saturday.

“Somebody who is playing his first Test, we can really say that he understands his bowling really well, it is something that India wants. Natarajan was trying to do what was expected out of him and I think he looks like a bright prospect for sure,” he added.

The vice-captain further said: “They have played some first-class games coming into this Test. Playing against Australia in Australia was never going to be easy. But they showed a lot of character and they understood what the team expected them to do. We wanted to make sure that once Saini walked off, how we can contain and put pressure on Australian batsmen by not giving them easy runs, run-scoring can be easy here as it is a good pitch. Playing their first match, they showed a lot of character and discipline and yes, the team was expecting them to do something and both Sundar and Natarajan did that really well.”

T Natarajan made his international debut in all three formats for India in the ongoing Australia tour. He came into the limelight after performing well in Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy for Tamil Nadu. The pacer was also the part of Sunrisers Hyderabad and he performed well for the David Warner led team.

Greg Chappell pens an open letter to Tim Paine says captains don’t abuse

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell has asked current Test captain Tim Paine to set a better example for the millions of children interested in the sport by his good behavior as a captain.

In the Sydney Test, Paine has been criticized for troubling India’s Ravichandran Ashwin with sledging during batting. In his column in the Sydney Morning Herald, Chappell told Penn that the visiting team should be respected and that as the captain of the host team, it is your responsibility first to set an example for your teammates.

“Abuse is not acceptable in any workplace and talk, in my opinion, is cheap. It does not show considerable strength. Rather, it displays a weakness of character, ”he wrote.

“I urge you to impress on the team to let the bat and ball do the talking and set better examples to millions of impressionable little boys and girls, lest they start imitating the worst instincts and actions of their sporting heroes.”

“This will be the greatest legacy that you can leave.” “Your mea culpa and promise to do better after Sydney is a step in the right direction. It shows contrition and a resolve to get things back on track.

“I have no doubt that you have a year or two of good cricket left in you, and detractors who are piling on right now, should judge you in time, and not on the basis of a mad afternoon,” he ends.

TRP scam: Prashant Bhushan shares screenshots of WhatsApp chat between Arnab Goswami, ex-BARC CEO

Former Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Chief Executive Partho Dasgupta and journalist Arnab Goswami allegedly colluded to give the latter’s news channel, Republic TV, an advantage over rivals, according to purported WhatsApp conversations between the two that went viral Friday.

More than 500 pages of chats purported to be between Goswami and Dasgupta, an accused in the TRP scam case, have gone viral on social media.

“These are a few snapshots of the damning leaked WhatsApp chats between BARC CEO & #ArnabGoswami. They show many conspiracies & unprecedented access to power in this govt; gross abuse of his media&his position as power broker. In any Rule of law country, he would be in jail for long,” said Bhushan in his tweet.

The voluminous chats reveal stunning information related to Goswami’s proximity with the Prime Minister’s Office, movers and shakers in the government, manipulation of TRPs and so on. In one of the screenshots, it appears that Dasgupta had allegedly sent a confidential BARC letter to Goswami saying that he had jammed the News Broadcasters Association (NBA).

Goswami’s Republic TV has been named in the TRP manipulation scam that the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Crime Branch-CID of Mumbai police has been investigating for the past few months. A few minutes later, AIIMS director Dr. Randeep Guleria was vaccinated with the corona vaccine.

“These vaccines are our ‘sanjivini’ in our fight against the pandemic. We have won the battle against polio and now we have reached the decisive phase of winning the war against Covid-19. I want to congratulate all frontline workers on this day, “Health minister Vardhan told reporters shortly after the vaccine shots were administered.

Also Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla posted on Twitter and shared a video of taking the Covishield vaccine himself which has been manufactured by his company.

It brings me great pride that #COVISHIELD is part of this historic effort & to endorse it’s safety & efficacy, I join our health workers in taking the vaccine myself,”Adar Poonawala wrote on Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually kicked off world’s largest Covid-19 vaccination drive. He started with a speech addressing more than 3,000 centers across India where the first shots were to be given.

PM Modi introduced the world’s largest Covid vaccination in India.

PM Modi started the first phase of vaccination campaign through video conference at 10:30 am.

“Normally, it takes many years to make a vaccine but in such a short span of time, not one, but two ‘Made in India’ vaccines are ready. Meanwhile, the work on other vaccines is progressing at a fast pace. This is a living example of India’s capability and talent. India’s vaccination programme is based on a very important principle that those who are in need of the vaccine will get vaccinated first. Norway Warns of Vaccination Risks for Sick Patients Over 80

Norway said Covid-19 vaccines may be too risky for the very old and terminally ill, the most cautious statement yet from a European health authority as countries assess the real-world side effects of the first shots to gain approval.

As per reports, 23 people have died in the country so far after taking the first dose of the vaccine, of which the autopsy reports of 13 have suggested side effects of the vaccines are the reason for their deaths.

A majority of those who died were elderly, sick people, the Norwegian Medicines Agency said, adding that all casualties were patients in nursing homes who were over the age of 80.

Norway has so far given at least one dose to about 33,000 people, focusing on those considered to be most at risk if they contract the virus, including the elderly. Most of the shots given are from BioNTec/Pfizer, with the Moderna vaccine now also being administered.

“For those with the most severe frailty, even relatively mild vaccine side effects can have serious consequences,” the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said. “For those who have a very short remaining life span anyway, the benefit of the vaccine may be marginal or irrelevant.”

Though both Covid-19 vaccines approved so far in Europe were tested in tens of thousands of people — including volunteers in their late 80s and 90s — the average trial participant was in his or her early 50s.

The first people to be immunized in many places have been older than that as countries rush to inoculate nursing-home residents at high risk from the virus.

In a statement, Pfizer said: “Pfizer and BioNTech are aware of reported deaths following administration of BNT162b2. We are working with NOMA to gather all the relevant information.

“India’s vaccines enjoy much credibility world over. We’ve earned this with our track record. Most children in the world get their vaccine shots of those made in India. The world’s trust is on our ‘Made in India’ vaccines will rise soon. These Indian vaccines are cheaper than foreign shots and easy to use. Some foreign doses are close to Rs 5,000/dose and need to be stored at minus 70 degrees,” said PM Modi, lauding India’s efforts in developing vaccines against Covid-19.
