Content creator Sherlyn Chopra accuses film director Sajid Khan of sexual misconduct

Content creator and former actor Sherlyn Chopra has accused film director Sajid Khan of sexual misconduct. Several women have made similar complaints against Sajid, which resulted in a one-year suspension from the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association.

Sajid was also removed from the helm of Housefull 4, which was in production when allegations against him first emerged, amid the Indian #MeToo movement in 2018.

On Tuesday, Chopra took to Twitter and shared an interview from 2019 where she narrated her ordeal. The actor said that some people tried to mislead her and added that she was harassed by several people.

As per Sherlyn, the incident took place in 2015, she wrote on Twitter, “When I had met him in April 2005, a few days after my father’s demise, he had taken his penis out of his pants and had asked me to feel it. I remember having told him that I know how a penis feels like & that the purpose of my meeting with him was not to feel or rate his penis.”

The actor further wrote that her phone records can be checked to prove the truth in the allegations. Chopra added, “After flashing his penis, he had not only asked me to touch it & feel it but also asked me if I had ever seen a penis as well endowed as his..”

Meanwhile, the allegations made by Chopra surfaced after late Jiah Khan’s sister accused Sajid Khan of harassing her. Many other actresses and a journalist have also made allegations against Khan.

In the last couple of years, Sajid Khan has been accused by multiple women in #metoo including assistant director Sonali Chopra, actress Rachel White and a journalist who brought allegations of sexual misconduct against him in 2018. He has denied the allegations. Last year, the filmmaker faced fresh charges of sexual misconduct. A model named Dimple Paul claimed on Instagram that Khan had tried to touch her inappropriately and also asked her to strip before him.

Sajad Lone’s party exits PAGD

Sajad Lone of the People’s Conference on Tuesday parted ways with the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, an alliance of mainstream regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir, opposed to the Centre’s August 2019 changes in the region. Lone was the official spokesperson of the Gupkar Alliance.

Lone announced the decision in a letter to PAGD head and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.

“On the face of it, PAGD won these elections unambiguously having won the maximum number of seats. We can’t hide statistics and apart from the number of seats that PAGD won, other important statistical variable in the context of August 5 (Abrogation of Article 370) is the number of votes polled against the PAGD,” Lone said in the letter released to the media here.

He said he believes the votes polled against the PAGD are mostly those cast by proxies of PAGD constituent parties against official PAGD candidates.

“And the net outcome of selectively voting for and against PAGD is a very poor vote share. This is certainly not the vote share that people of J&K deserved post 5 August,” Lone said in the letter.

He further stated that he would, however, want to add that they are divorcing from the alliance not its objectives.

“We will continue to adhere to the objectives that we set out when this alliance was made. And the PAGD leadership should be assured that we will extend support on all issues which fall within the ambit of stated objectives. We have issued clear instructions to all party leaders not to issue any statements against PAGD alliance or its leaders,” the letter reads.

‘Chinese village in Arunachal’|India takes necessary measures: MEA

As India and China continue to remain locked in a months-long bitter border standoff in eastern Ladakh, Beijing is undertaking construction work along with the border areas near Arunachal Pradesh, a report said.

US-based imaging company Planet Labs has, with the help of satellite images claimed that around 100 houses have been built along the river Tsari Chu in upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. Notably, there was no construction at a particular place in 2019.

The satellite images from November 2020 shows the village constructed in the eastern range of the Himalayas compared with the satellite image from August 2019, the Chinese have made substantial gains.

India’s external affairs ministry acknowledged the satellite images and said that the Indian government has also stepped up border infrastructure including construction roads and bridges.

BJP’s Arunachal Pradesh MP Tapir Gao told the channel, “Construction is going on. China has entered more than 60-70 km inside the Upper Subansiri district if you follow the path along the river. They are constructing the road along the river known locally as the Lensi as it flows in the direction of Subansiri river”.

On Gao’s claim, senior Congress party leader  P Chidambaram has demanded answers from the union government. He said if the allegation made by the BJP MP is true, will the government again give a clean chit to China or blame previous governments for it.

Meanwhile, Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), asked why was Prime Minister Narendra Modi silent on these reports of the Chinese having built a 101-home village inside Indian territory.

“The Chinese PLA is continuously occupying our territory in Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim. In Arunachal Pradesh, the map shows that place within Indian territory but the Chinese have constructed permanent structures there. Why’s PM silent on Chinese occupation of Indian territory?” Owaisi asked.

His remarks came hours after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had commented on the reports and taunted the PM by saying he had promised not to seize Indian land to any country.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India has stepped up the construction of border infrastructure, including roads and bridges for the improvement of livelihood of its citizens. The response from the ministry came when asked about a report by NDTV channel, saying China has constructed a new village in the disputed region of Arunachal Pradesh and it consisted of about 101 homes. The news channel said the report is based on satellite images accessed exclusively by it.

“We have seen recent reports on China undertaking construction work along the border areas with India. China has undertaken such infrastructure construction activity in the past several years,” the MEA said. “In response, our government too has stepped up border infrastructure including the construction of roads, bridges etc, which has provided much needed connectivity to the local population along the border,” it added. “Government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all the necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said.

Media trial does impact investigation, says Bombay HC

The Bombay High Court on Monday held that a media trial interferes with administration of justice and could lead to obstructing investigation and administration of justice. The court, referring to the print and electronic coverage following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, said this amounts to criminal contempt.

The high court made the observation while disposing of a batch of public interest litigations (PILs) filed by former police officers, activists, lawyers and NGOs from Maharashtra in the aftermath of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in June 2020. They had requested the court to issue restraint orders to media reporting on the actor’s death. After hearing out the arguments of various parties for weeks, the court had reserved its judgment on November 6, 2020.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipankat Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni directed the print and electronic media to exercise restraint and refrain from publishing any news item, debate, discussion on interview while reporting on certain cases or at a particular stage of investigation (Nilesh Navalakha and others v Union of India and others and connected cases).

There should be no report/discussion/debate or interview which could harm the interests of the accused being investigated or a witness… “With a view to satiate the thirst of stealing a march over competitors in the field of reporting,” they observed.

The judgment laid down a list of ‘indicative but not exhaustive’ list of reports which tend to cause prejudice to ongoing investigation.

The court had asked the Centre on October 29 last year as to why it should not frame guidelines on media coverage of sensitive criminal matters and ongoing investigations, and whether “excessive” reporting by the press amounted to interference in the administration of justice under the Contempt of Courts Act.

The petitioners include former DGPs P S Pasricha, K Subramaniam, D Shivanandan, Sanjeev Dayal, Satish Chandra Mathur, and former Commissioners of Mumbai Police Mahesh N Singh, Dhananjay N Jadhav and former Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief K P Raghuvanshi.

The plea called out “anchors of some TV channels (that) have been virtually running a vituperative 24×7 campaign against Mumbai Police and its Commissioner, DCP of the zone and other officers by attacking them by name in most unbecoming manner.”
