Gambhir also asserted that Shubman Gill should open the innings with Rohit Sharma but he needs to be grounded and focus on his strength.
“See, he should be opening with Rohit Sharma, no doubt about it, but let’s not jump the gun. You just can’t put someone really high up there. Yes, he’s got the talent, but he needs to keep his head down because international cricket can be tough!,” Gambhir said.
“Playing in Australia, winning this series with a young side, you’ve done really well, you batted beautifully. No doubt about it, but let’s give him time as well and let him develop on its own, rather than putting too much of pressure and putting too much of expectations on him,” the 39-year-old added.

Mexico’s Covid-19 deaths surpassed those in India, making the country’s outbreak the third-most deadly worldwide, as officials struggle to contain a pandemic that’s taking an increasingly grim toll.
The Health Ministry reported an increase of 1,506 deaths on Thursday night, bringing the total 155,145. Cases rose 18,670 to 1,825,519.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who himself is currently battling the illness, has resisted mandatory lockdowns seen in other countries and has largely pressed forward with the same priorities he had before the outbreak. He’s avoided widespread direct stimulus to ease the virus’s economic impact and has continued to tout his efforts to root out corruption.
“The Covid-19 pandemic causes much sadness, much pain, it’s harmful, but more harmful, more dire is the plague of corruption; it’s worse than an illness,” Lopez Obrador said at an event last week. The president made the remark a day after Mexico reported a record daily rise of 1,803 Covid deaths.
As the toll in Mexico rose, and the country surpassed Italy, Spain and the U.K. in total fatalities, Lopez Obrador emphasized the larger population. But in overtaking India, Mexico now has a higher death toll than a country with more than 10 times as many people. On the basis of Covid-19 deaths per capita, Mexico is among the top three highest in Latin America.
The death rate reported by Covid in India has fallen to about a tenth of its daily high in September to more than 100 deaths per day. The number of recorded cases also declined after its vaccination campaign began earlier in January. The South Asian nation of around 1.3 billion people was released from one of the world’s toughest lockdowns early last year.
The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating SpaceX over whether the company discriminates against non-U.S. citizens in its hiring practices and said Elon Musk’s company is stonewalling a subpoena for information, court documents revealed Thursday.
The DOJ’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section received a complaint of employment discrimination from a non-U.S. citizen claiming that the company discriminated against him based on his citizenship status.
The Immigrant and Employee Rights division of the DOJ notified SpaceX by email on June 8 that it had opened an investigation, and requested that SpaceX provide information and documents relating to its hiring process, according to the court filings made on Thursday.
The filings were made in the United States District Court for the central district of California.
“Specifically, the charge alleges that on or about March 10, 2020, during the Charging Party’s interview for the position of Technology Strategy Associate, SpaceX made inquiries about his citizenship status and ultimately failed to hire him for the position because he is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident”, DOJ attorney Lisa Sandoval wrote in the complaint filed on Thursday.
In a fresh development the Uttar Pradesh police has lodged an FIR against journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, journalist Zafar Agha, journalist Mrinal Pande and 4 others at Gautam Buddh Nagar.
The accused have been booked for offences under sections 153(A), 153(B), 295(A), 298 IPC and other relevant provisions for allegedly spreading misinformation.
Senior anchor and Consulting Editor of India Today Rajdeep Sardesai has also been taken off the air for two weeks for claiming that a farmer’s death during the January 26 Tractor rally held in Delhi was due to police firing, BestMediaInfo reported. The channel has also deducted a month’s salary from him.
. Rajdeep Sardesai had tweeted the fake news on Twitter, and later had repeated the same on India Today, claiming that bullet injury was seen on the head of the deceased.
Shashi Tharoor and others named in the FIR had also circulated the fake news, which had instigated the protestors to indulge in violence.
The Caravan had also spread the fake news, claiming that “An eyewitness told The Caravan that he saw the police firing from behind the grills of the Andhra Education Society.” They had also reported that eyewitnesses said they saw police personnel fleeing from the spot after Navneet was shot.
While most others had subsequently deleted their social media posts after it was emerged that the farmer had died after tractor had overturned while he was attempting a stunt, the tweets of Caravan still remain.
The FIR says that the accused persons are responsible for the riots on 26th January, as it was instigated by their digital media posts. It says that despite the large scale attack on the police causing injuries to hundreds of policemen, the accused persons circulated fake news in a coordinated and well-planned manner that police have shot a person dead. ‘It was done deliberately so that it cases a large-scale riot and communal violence among various communities’, the FIR alleges.
The Noida Police have begun investigation into the matter, according to officials.
On January 26, thousands of protesting farmers had clashed with the police during the tractor rally called by farmer unions to highlight their demand for repeal of the Centre’s three farm laws.
Many of the protesters, driving tractors, reached the Red Fort and entered the monument. Some protesters even hoisted religious flags on its domes and the flagstaff at the ramparts, where the national flag is unfurled by the prime minister on Independence Day.
Known for his hunger strikes to bring about social changes, activist Anna Hazare is gearing up for yet another protest. On Thursday, in a statement, he said that he will begin an indefinite fast from January 30 at his hometown in Maharashtra in a bid to show support to farmers who have been protesting against the agriculture related laws. Urging his followers to protest at their respective locations, he said that farmers’ demands must be met.
“I have been agitating for important demands of farmers for the last four years. It seems like the government is not taking proper decision on the issue of farmers. The government is not sensitive towards the farmers,” the 84-year-old activist stated in a press statement.
“We have kept our demands before the Central Government time and again. I have written letters to the Prime Minister and Union Agriculture Minister five times in the last three months. Representatives of the government are discussing the matter but they haven’t reached proper solution regarding the demands so far,” he added.
Contrary to popular belief, women, like every other gender, too, hold high hopes from Union Budget. With the appointment of first Indian Woman Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, it should be clear by now that finances are for everyone even as it have mostly been handled by men of the country.
This year, the budget bears more responsibilities than ever as it aims to revive the covid hit economy in a bid to achieve its $5 trillion target by 2024. And while it may have gone unnoticed, the pandemic has been rather unfair to women. According to ICME, women accounted for less than 11% of the total Indian workforce, but suffered 14% of the job losses amid the pandemic. With the impartial system that women have always been a target of, it is obvious that they would take longer to recover. Amid this, they have one hope left — Union Budget 2021.
After announcing a slew of incentives to common man, Nirmala Sitharaman looks forward to introduce more stimulus packages with India’s first paperless budget to reinforce the economy.
What women want?
Well, there are multiple sectors women demand reforms in. For example terms such as ownership of physical assets, access to resources and equal opportunities which sound like rights to men feel like luxuries to women. Not to forget wage parity which has always kept women at the bottom of the society.
For the record, women have been long term investors than men and the least they demand is recognitions and equal chances of expression, if not greater.
While it may sound far-fetched, homemakers, more than any other profession, look forward to the budget. “The country operates from kitchen. If there is no food, there is no life, forget growth. However, the hikes in prices of household items have been a cause of wary,” a homemaker tells us.
When asked what goods suffered hike in price during the pandemic, she named a slew of product as basic as pulses, cooking oil, LPG gas among others.
“I want the finance minister to make a budget considering the kitchen. While people suffered job losses and pay cuts amid the pandemic, grocery and staples witnessed never seen before price hike during the lockdown. I hope Finance Minister brings out a budget that doesn’t demand women to compromise in kitchen. Empty stomachs can’t run the country,” another homemaker tells us.
An elderly woman, when asked about her expectations from budget, replies, “I only hope that we see no more price hikes in groceries.” She further expresses the need of lowering prices of LPG gas cylinders.
“Running kitchen has become a challenge with pay cuts and limited resources. From flour to cooking oil, many of the products used in kitchen have reached unbearable rates. I demand the Finance Minister to look into this,” says another woman who runs the kitchen.
After being termed as a “traitor” by farmer leaders for trying to defame their agitation, actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu said the kisan netas wouldn’t know where to hide if he starts revealing their “deep secrets”.
Launching a scathing attack on farmer leaders, Sidhu hit out at farm leaders for allegedly spreading false propaganda and hatred against him.
The 36-year-old actor-turned-activist is in the eye of a storm for being among the protesters who hoisted a religious flag atop the Red Fort on Republic Day.
Sidhu, who has been named in Delhi Police’s FIR in connection with the rioting at Red Fort on R-Day, said the only reason he was holding back from revealing more was his commitment to the goal of the farmers’ agitation — to get the new farm laws repealed. Denying that there was violence at Red Fort, he said the protesters who were there deserved support rather than condemnation.
“Had the farmer leaders taken a stand to celebrate the people who reached Red Ford, they would have been able to put more pressure on the government… We woke up the government on November 26 when we broke through the barricades, and we woke up the government again on January 26. But you don’t understand.”
“Will RSS or BJP stooge would fix Nishan Sahib there or somebody who wishes to contest election? You are in fact calling traitors all those who reached there. It brings out your bad intention. Either you don’t understand or don’t want to understand. Tomorrow no one would follow emotions as you give certificates of being traitors. In place of standing behind people (who reached Red Fort), you have started targeting just one person. You are full with ego and are not listening to anybody. This is style of the government (not listening to anybody),” he said.
Naresh Tikait, the leader of the Indian Farmers Union in Muzaffarnagar, has announced to end the picket on Ghazipur (border) today after the rise of farmers on Republic Day. According to the information received, section 144 has also been imposed on the Ghazipur border. Meanwhile, the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has also ordered the DM and SP to end the sit-in of the farmers. In view of this, a notice has been issued to the farmers who are staging the Ghazipur border. Ghaziabad ADM City Shailendra Kumar Singh has confirmed this.
The Ghaziabad district administration has given an ultimatum to the farmers to vacate the picket site from the UP gate. After receiving the notice to vacate the highway, Bhakyu’s spokesperson Rakesh Tikait has refused to move from the picket site. Rakesh Tikait said crying that some people are conspiring with the administration. Under no circumstances will this movement end.
On Thursday evening, District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey had issued a notice to Rakesh Tikait and other farmer leaders asking them to vacate the highway. After this Rakesh Tikait was ready to arrest. However, ADM City Shailendra Singh had reached the stage to talk to him that Rakesh Tikait came to know that BJP MLA Nandkishore Gurjar was shouting slogans along with his supporters at some distance from the venue of the agitation. Tikait then refused to be arrested and sat on hunger strike.
Significantly, the Delhi Police’s action is continuing regarding the violence during the tractor parade. On Thursday, several farmer leaders were served notices by the police. At the same time, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also come into action. He has issued a directive to end the sit-in of the farmers. Rakesh Tikait, leader of the Indian Farmers Union, has said that if anything happens to him, the administration will be responsible for it. Rakesh Tikait said that the farmer of the country is being tortured. The movement will continue till the return of laws. They will not vacate the dharna. BJP MLAs have come with the police, farmers are being tortured. BJP is destroying farmers. Will not let farmers waste. He said that BJP is plotting, BJP tried to discredit the entire peasant movement.
The Ghaziabad administration has given an ultimatum to the protesting farmers to vacate the UP gate by midnight on Thursday, otherwise they will be removed from there. Officials gave this information. Three farmer organizations have withdrawn their agitation against three central agricultural laws over violence in Delhi on Republic Day. The administration then gave this “oral” instruction. A district official told PTI that Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey interacted with the protesters camping at UP Gate on the Delhi border and asked them to vacate the protest site by night. If not, the administration will remove them.
Senior administrative officer and senior police officer including DM Ajay Shankar Pandey are present on the spot. The heavy force from the Meerut range has arrived here. According to sources, direct indications have been given from Lucknow that the farmers be removed from the picket site.
Fewer people are left at the strike site now. According to the information received, the tent is being removed from the picket site. Earlier, RAF personnel carried out a flag march on the Ghazipur border.
On January 26, farmers organized a tractor rally on the occasion of Republic Day. During this period, some people from the peasants reached Delhi on a different route. Due to which the Delhi ITO and the Red Fort caused an uproar. After this, the Uttar Pradesh government is eliminating farmers wherever they are going on a dharna.
The central government has come out with three new agricultural laws in the past year, which have made provisions like procurement outside government mandis, approving contract farming and ending the stock limit of many grains and pulses. Farmers have been agitating since this month and are demanding to withdraw these laws. The farmers were earlier agitating in their states regarding these laws. At the same time, from 26 November, farmers of many states are protesting at different borders of Delhi (Singhu Border, Shahjahanpur Border, Ghazipur Border, Tiki Border).
The police have registered dozens of FIRs in connection with the violence in Delhi and the lookout circular has been issued on Thursday against the farmers leaders and other accused, who have been named in this violence. Now these people cannot go outside the country at the moment. Police have said that passports of these leaders will also be confiscated.
